Squad Leading is like being a Dad

Post by ledo1222 »

From my past experience in squad leading iv noticed that being a squad leader is like being a dad. Im not whining but normal grunts are like 7 year olds that have been trained to shoot at anything that moves.

I find my self saying, Come here Come here Come here Come here Come here here here
here here here here!!!!!

like my dad says to my 6 year old brother.

or like don't do that, i said don't that, see what you did there.

So has any other squad leader felt like this?

I rarely squad lead, but it's hard to encourage everyone to move and feel like a unit. I would say join a clan and squad up with them or at least a few, than people will follow a bit more ;)

As long as I tell them what to do and not how to do it, I dont get this problem.

A SL success is proportional to the SMs discipline.

Never behave like a know it all sargent from outer space, but kick the unwanted. And if you rant, the very least explain what are they doing wrong.

And yeah, I've felt like that sometimes.

Oh god yes. Oh god yes!

Sometimes I just want to really kick *** and take names, but when I have nearly all new SMs (or SMs not used to massively coordinated squad work) its really hard to do. Sometimes even when they perform well I start saying things.

This one last time I had my medic revive me in a very hot CP. Well another SM follwed him and just watched as I was healed. I wanted to yell so bad; "Come on, what you looking for? A show? Point your gun to the enemy!"

But in the end I like that part... because over time you don't have to tell them that anymore and they all grewd up on ya.

Squad leading is like any other position of authority imo. If you exude confidence, demonstrate competence, and execute a well thought out plan you will have people lining up to follow your orders.

On the other hand, take a lackadaisical approach, second guess yourself or allow yourself to be undermined and your subordinates will question your leadership and either do their own thing or find new leadership.

I wouldn't liken squad leading to being a father except that some people on the internet can really act like 7 year old spoiled brats. Oh and occasionally it would be nice to be able to physically discipline some individuals (like a RL smack across the head).

Thinking of your SMs as your children is a strong way of putting it, but I like the sentiment :P

Look at my thread about overchatter on mumble. It became the exact same conversation between me, wicca, killon, and mike

New players you especially have to babysit through their first few rounds, a squad of sm's who have played PR for a while, even if they aren't great are the nicest public sm's you'll get

On the other hand, when random chance gives you a squad full of competent players, it is amazing to see how little language is actually needed to achieve some basic goals.

Takes the right kind of person to be a squad leader. Need to speak and give orders to your squad mates. Keep them busy not bored. I always go straight to the action so that they enjoy the game at least. I dont know, I would never treat them as kids. If I did I would be irritated and would rather kick them from the squad if they are not willing to learn. Thats my 2cents

Commanding is like being a dad... All the stupid squad leaders dont listen to your orders... makes me want to go out there and personally execute them for treason.
