Re: New player here!
First of all read the manual. Buy a microphone. When you've done this, start playing CO-OP offline, then online and then play on the real servers. Read the forums carefully and know what not to do. And don't spawn at the purple cache on INS! And by the way I recommend reading the manual 10 times before even clicking on the "PR" logo on your screen!
We are staying up!

Re: New player here!
Reading the manual 10 times is definitely overdoing it. Personally, when starting out I found watching youtube gameplay videos to be of great help.
Just look at what they do, how they do it, and copy.
I'm a bit of an oddball in this case as I had about 2 months of preparation before I started playing - I was waiting to get a new PC, but preparing yourself doesn't have to take that much time at all.
Just make sure to read the manual, know what the game-modes are about and some basic game functions like how the medic kit works.
Then join any squad labeled as INFANTRY, INF TEAMWORK, INF ENGVOIP (having a mic and using it is VERY important), or the like, and hopefully the squad leader will help you out. Just make sure to tell the squad you're new.
And yes, infantry. Stick with the 'simple' stuff when you first start playing, because this is a complicated game. If anyone tells you different, they're mad or have been playing it for too long.
Good servers to start on include: Tactical Gamer (US), PRTA (EU), NwA (UK)

Re: New player here!
*Throws you an M4 carbine*
Take that. Stick with it. All these fancy tanks and aircraft can wait, at first you'll need to learn how to fight as an infantryman.
Here, take a few shots at those targets. Don't forget to call out contacts in a combat situation and wait for orders on whether to engage or not, unless you have been allowed to shoot on sight.
Ah, your grouping wasn't too bad there! If you want to improve your performance, you'll need to understand that the more you move, the worse you shoot. Take a knee, wait a few seconds, take a breath and then shoot, don't spray away.
Yeah, that's it! Put your weapon on safe and listen up again.
When you're being sent out there, you'll report to your squad leader immediately. Tell him how to call you, that you're new, and ask him what equipment he wants to assign you and where to deploy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Although, here, take this one as well.
*Hands you the field manual*
This is your bible now. Read it carefully and you'll spare your squad leader a lot of stress.
Don't try to be a hero. Try to stay alive before everything else. Know how to use the rifle, and learn the basics of first aid - the field manual covers that - so that you can help your medic, should he get wounded in combat, and people can rely on you. You won't want to drive any heavy vehicles or even aircraft yet.
In a proper "INF VOIP" squad, you'll be of use even when not very experienced, and you'll quickly learn everything that's important out on the battlefield. Follow orders, don't be too shy on the radio, and ask when you have questions, and you'll get along nicely with the veterans.
Now go and report to Wicca's platoon, these guys are excellent at introducing recruits.
...
I'm not quite sure why I just role-played that, but yeah. Read the manual, join an infantry squad, tell them you're new and let them guide you through a bit, and you'll be fine. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here, you'll hopefully find that this community is very eager to help newcomers as long as they're willing to learn
And do what Wicca suggested. Though that's the only suggestion of Wicca that you should ever listen to. Normally he cannot be trusted.

Re: New player here!
Your first round should be on an english speaking server. Goods examples are *NwA*, Tactical Gaming and PRTA.
A mic is a must have if you want the full experience. People will also treat you more seriously and some squad leaders kick non-microphone players.
Tell the squad leader that you are new.
Stick to infantry squads untill you learn the mechanics of the game.
Edit: Damn ninja'd

Re: New player here!
Oh and, you might want to look into using mumble if you want to join servers such as NwA, Tactical Gamer and PRTA. They are the best, but you won't get the full experience on such servers without mumble. There's guides for it around here if there's any difficulties with it.
Most other servers you can join without it if you want, although the overall gameplay there is obviously worse due to a lack of inter-squad communication.

Re: New player here!
Until you are confident always let your SL know you are green, some squad leaders are more than happy to help, others less so, sometimes it depends on the situation. Myself, if I just need someone to fire a rifle in a given direction, any rifle will do, if I am leading a covert strike I need to know all my squad know 100% what they are doing. So don't be offended if not every SL can't give you all their time every time, but if they find out 2km behind enemy lines that you don't know what your shovel is for, they are going to be pissed.
Shop about first, try to find a server and players that suit you, then stick to the same server for a while. But don't let a bad server or bad players ruin your experience, if it aint working out, move on. Expect to get grief, expect to be shouted at, happened to me for at least the first 6 month I was playing, and still happens today if I make a colossal foul up (or sneeze while I'm gunning a T90, damn sensitive mouse, but I digress), point is don't be discouraged by it, use it.

Re: New player here!
I must say, I've never read the manual. I also jumped on a "real" server right away. That was a long time ago, and they were probably a bit more helpfull then.
But I'm sure if you join a squad, tell them you're new, they'll be glad to help you. Everybody loves a new PR player.

My general advice to new players is to pick one role and learn it to perfection. Everyone loves there Medic as long as they are half decent, so I would go for that.
Here's a great video on intermediate/advanced medicing:
