Load Times

Post by Lordtrenchard »

Any ideas how to speed up map load times? Mine are depressingly slow and I have a half decent machine.

One of the biggest factors for load times would be your RAM. When a map loads, its basically just opening a whole heap of files onto your RAM, so if you have faster RAM it will help alot (eg DDR3 is faster than DDR2).

The harddrive is your bottleneck. Even if you have a fast RAM, the hdd will slow things down. I suggest getting an SSD (solid state drive), or using a ramdisk if you have plenty of memory.

Before i had an SSD i usually loaded in to see the timer at 1.30, now i load in 5-10 seconds before the timer even starts.

the last time I played I was making it in with with about 5 minutes missing from the game timer, i.e. it was taking between 5-10 minutes to load in. Progress=pain. I remember back in the 0.7 days when I could load in and still stand a chance of getting near the assets/into a sqd intent on communication/teamwork. Those were the days.

The newest versions really are incredibly hard going on average machines, for a 6yr old game.

I usually finish loading in 30 seconds before the game starts. So i spend my time talking in mumble. To everyones frustration.

If you want me to stop talking, get me a new computer. :P

you play on the lowest settings, you have no say in this

are you running in compatibility mode and win7 by any chance?
it increases load times by a huge amount and in my case also causes a ram leak

i have this POS
Project Reality Forums - View Profile: karambaitos
and it loads in about 1:10 mins
at these settings
ground texture: medium
geometry: high
effects: high
texture: medium
ligthing low
shadows off
dynamic lights off
AA x2
res 1366x768
and have a HD running a 5400rpm so yeah

there are some tweaks you can do to lower ram usage and make loads faster, but its not by that much still

I have a great computer but I have to wait a bit as well, I think its my hard drive transfer rate letting me down.

PR has a long 'briefing time' at the start of the game so that most players will be ready when the timer runs out.

If you have less than 4gb of RAM, then upgrade to 4GB and that should make a decent improvement to your load times. It also removes the initial stutter after spawning in the first time.

Further to that, the game is heavily HDD bottlenecked during map loads while it dumps everything into RAM, which a SSD will help considerably but they're an expensive fix if PR map loading time is the only problem you want to fix :)

RAM is not the issue. It is CPU+OS. Use win7 + fast CPU to load faster. Tested.

PR is a very unstable game. It runs different every time.

I used to load at 2:30 before OS reinstall, with huge amount of sh.. piled on my HDD, now it loads at 1:50 if im lucky and the maps is small.

I think like wine, it gets better with age.

Hey, I'm not going to reinstall my OS and CPU again just to make you happy. I can say that on win7 and same cpu you will load 10-30% faster than on winXP

When using windows xp sp whatever co mode on windows 7 pr would load longer. Using Windows 7 x86 and windows 7 x64 benchmark on clean instal on cpu give me about 1450 in x64. On x86 was 1185. On 64bit game loaded faster, not a lot, but faster than x86. Don't know why my WEI (win 7 rate) for cpu went from 5.9 to 5.3, don't know why, maybe is from bios update, but from my cpu benchmark in 'cpubenchmark' page it says that mine have 250 bigger score than they tested cpu ;)
