Rethinking the Grid call system
Just a basic statement and question. Ever since the new grid system came out (13x13) I've wondered if a slight change in our grid call system would be beneficial.
The proposal is that their be prowords for each level of detail.
Grid would denote two digits (alpha numeric): A1
Keypad would denote three digits (alpha numeric-numeric): A1-3
Subkey would denote four digits (alpha numeric-numeric@numeric): A1-3-9
The second proposal is that instead of hyphenating our keypads we could let the string start Numerical Alpha Numerical: 1A3 or as spoken Key 1A3

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
Seems to me like a lot of this is based on player preference. I do like this proposed way of saying a grid, but I dont know if people would understand me when I used this method. Try throwing it around in game and get people familiar with it, and see if it catches on.

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
I don't think this needs too be implemented in the game (map). Good players who find this useful can do this (they don't need the keypads drawn on the map), even though it's only useful on large maps.
I also don't think that the system we have now is that bad, when it comes to finding an enemy on the map after reading a grid, experience is most important.
Letter are confusing sometimes though, had a norwegian and a swede talking about J and I, how one pronounces the other since the language is very similar. I sometimes have too do a double think when I hear "G = jee" and "J = jay". Most of the times people put the letter grid wrong, I do believe that a number system would be better, if people are educated enough too know that x comes before y. X is horizontal and Y is vertical.
Enemy at 8; 3 kp 7 (notice the comma..)

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
Well, that's why most people use the phonetic alphabet and would call "Golf" and "Juliet". Less confusing than having two numbers both for one grid type.I sometimes have too do a double think when I hear "G = jee" and "J = jay".
I like this suggestion, but I doubt it's possible to implement that change anymore, people are just too used to the keypad system - which, of course, works quite well anyway, the new suggestion would merely spare us a few seconds of our life in which we would otherwise type the letters "kp" into teamchat or say "keypad" over VoIP.

I wouldn't change it. It would just confuse everyone until they get familiar with the new system.
Most people already know the phonetic alphabet anyway. and every gamer has a keypad even though it sometimes seems like its upside down to someone

back on topic i like it. It starts bringing it just a bit closer to how i'm used to doing it IRL

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
I've always used A1-3 option, never really used subkeys as people move to quickly and maps are too small for such detail, but if i woul use subkey it would go A1-3-9.
Also saying enemy around A1-A2 should be said when using whole grid fields, so its not confused with A1-2.

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
The way I generally do it would be
A13 at the east apartment block
X axis, Y axis, sub sector, landmark reference

Definately not since we look for the X axis on maps IRL first? The second proposal is that instead of hyphenating our keypads we could let the string start Numerical Alpha Numerical: 1A3 or as spoken Key 1A3

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
To clarify to xambone, a suggestion is something we ask of the devs. I'm asking of the community.
Think of the following situation:
SL: "Pilot take us to Keypad OneThreeAlphaOne"
Pilot: "Keypad OneThreeAlphaOne"
The call out Keypad tells the pilot that I want to be droped at a keypad. If it were grid it'd be a whole wide area.
No need to repeat, blantantly obvious, and you can even keep the real standard of only numbers 0-9 since the Phonetic seperates the Vertical from the Keypad.
Conventionally it'd be
SL: "Pilot take us to Alpha Thirteen Keypad One"
Pilot: "Alpha Thirteen Keypad One"
Here you get the same jist but breaking up the nice pretty alpha numerical string is the word keypad. By prefacing the string with the Keypad you are telling the pilot what to expect from the string.
----
The use of landmarks is probably preffered over a subkey, I don't find many uses of subkeys myself, but too often, especially on Shijia Valley my use of landmarks went unnoticed even when I was directly explaining it to the pilot.
In my civilian time I use.... no grid system. But assuming people read left to right since the 1-13 vertical is left and Alpha-Mike is top Left to Right it seems to me more intuitive.
The biggest issue with your above, and really the thing that made me start to rethink the call system, is that through text you give no indication of (A)(1)(3) or (A)(13). This is the benefit of the proword that could be used before a string to signify what level of clarity.[R-DEV]Rudd wrote:The way I generally do it would be

that's how i always communicate it, as long as you stress the words, grid, key and sub, use the phonetic alphabet people are going to have to really not have heard you to get it wrong.goguapsy wrote:What's wrong with "A1kp3sub2"?

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
I usually use part of the grid system and then a reference on the map.
For example: "Pilot, bring me to B5, SQ4 position"
I leave the rest up to the discretion of the pilot. (This can be very risky seeing that half of all my flights in helos result in a crash due to pilot error haha)

oops yes, I actually say A1kp3, near the east apartment building, just forgot to write it due to working on a map at the same time as reading forums, damned multitasking.ytman wrote: Think of the following situation:

Re: Rethinking the Grid call system
Instead of the Phonetic numbers we could just switch it all to numbers, similar to the ArmA 2 map system.

My two examples:
First, x; y + kp: (didn't want to give it 13 x 13, that would be unnecessary.)

Second, a triple keypad map, does make the keypads smaller though:

This however I don't feel so strong about changing. These are ideas which if needed could be a good substitute to the old system.

The best Idea for the Transportationist is to type "w2" instead of "Where to?"
