Joystick: Armour Control Script.

Post by sylent/shooter »

Hey guys, recently I've been fooling around with my control.con in my profile and I figured out a way to use a joystick instead of my mouse within an armoured vehicle.

Now I haven't quite figured out how to limit it to the armoured vehicle so for now it can also control all mouse look functions. (I.e infantry, light vehicles etc etc.)

Now I know some people might think that this is dumb and prefer the mouse and you're entitled to your own opinion, but for me this adds a whole new level of realism when I'm gunning in a tank or something.

Now this is tested on a local co-op server which is why I'm driving the vehicles as well.

In the actual controls options within the game, there is no option to just use the joystick to control the mouse axis. Which is why I had to edit the control.con file.

Note: my joystick isn't the best and therefore sometimes doesn't go back to center point which makes me crosshairs move up and down very slightly. you'll see in the video that I try to correct it. There also isn't any sound in the video because of my sound card and running XP.

I will post the script later in case anyone would like to add it. (Should work with most joysticks, tested on Logitech Attack 3)

IMO in this game where you need ridiculously precise input for tank gunnery unless you use a ministick for fine adjustment/you use a hall effect joystick with steady hands you're better off using the mouse.

Joysticks make sense when you need continuous amounts of traverse, not for fine aim. If there were an actual FCS in game that would change my views though.

I can imagine it adds a lot more feel and realism to the game! :D Nice work. Looks cool as well. But I can also imagine you'll loose accuracy with this set-up.

Awesome, will have to try it out!

I would like to see the day when armour turrets are controlled by joystick or WASD in PR, the mouse control is unrealistic and too easy to use with pinpoint precision. Who says aiming armour turrets has to be easy as pie?

Combined arms did this. W and S moved the cam up and down, A and D made it move left/right. For me, using my throttle AND stick at the same time=EPIC(Saitek X52 XD)

Combined Arms is boss with WASD armor. That way you can't spin your turret around like a tardy.

okay so I was busy yesterday so i didnt get to post the script, and I am going to be gone for two days. so when I come back I will post the script and a tutorial on how to implement it :)

Edit: also it takes some getting use to but it is very fun to use. I'm experimenting on ways to change sensitivity in game.

umm, you can set your joystick up to be used for the vehicle controls in the ingame controls menu, just as you would for setting it up to fly a jet/chopper... No need to manually edit your controls.con?

The big problem with this, or the WASD approach on setting it to the turrets is while yes, you get a more realistic feel to the tank gunner (which really helps when shooting movies too btw as you can get nice turret tunring, unlike what you get with a mouse), but without any turret stabilization (which we haven't managed to put into PR) as you get on any modern MBT, its totally useless as any small bump you go over then you struggle for the next few secs countering that single bump, and by the time that's happened your doing the other one. You may say this is not different from the mouse, but its far easier to counter it with a mouse than it is with a joystick.

So ye if your getting someone to act in a movie, get them to do this, if not, I wouldn't recommend it.

Is turret stabilization hard-coded?

There is some turret stabilization in vBF vehicles, would think that it'd be possible to achieve that in PR too. Mosquill to the rescue!

I find joysticks (well mainly their throttle) are affective at the actual driving, the throttle enables you to stay on a limited speed and turning can be much easier, dont think everyone would find it comfortable tough. On the gunner's side the only thing that could really help you is a high DPI mouse ;]

If you can set the Joystick sensibility then Joystick > mouse. Dont forget it has a joystick in the real thing...

actually it has a gamepad in the CR2 :p

That thumb pad on the right controls the direction of the turret :p

But like I said, while a joystick dose give you somewhat more realistic control, without turret stabilization like you would have on a real life tank, its much harder to correct your aim after going over a bump with a joystick than it is with a mouse.

i couldn't find the option to turn the mouse inputs (movement) to be controlled by the Joystick so I did this instead. I'm back from being away for a bit now. :) and to be honest (at least IMO) it's quite easy to counter act bumps and stuff when you're not zoomed in at all. I personally only use the zoom when i'm stationary as I have a hard time, even with a mouse, countering bumps while zoomed :P
