Nostalgic moment (Desert combat)

Post by Gracler »

In my search for news on The upcoming Battlefield 3 i came across the old mod for Battlefield 1942 called "Desert combat"

Re watched the trailer of it.....

Already back then long before Battlefield 2 existence a small group of modders came together and made an extraordinary modification that made me sit and experiment countless hours with all the new vehicles they brought into the game.

I still remember in its early days when they made the first Apache and when you jumped in it it made weird things or crashed the server....but eventually they made it fly and it was a great thing.....also loved the HIND D.....The m109 howitzer...the ML-RS ....the list is extreme.

It really showed that the battlefield franchise had a lot of potential not only to make streamlined game-play but also to experiment with whatever you could think of.

Battlefield 2 improved a lot of things and Project Reality really is the bf2 version of Desert combat but with a much higher focus on tactics than equipment....which isn't a bad thing, but damn it was fun to blow shit up in Desert combat.

Am I the only grunt who followed Desert combat mod closely?

I know this isn't directly PR related but though Desert combat and PR share many ideas. ..just look at those vehicles in the trailer....

Haha yeah I got to play some Desert Combat (single player...).

It was really fun. Bad graphics + old game = win :D
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

I think that some of the guys doing the Desert combat mod was actually hired to work on battlefield 2.....but I cant remember if it was just a rumor.

I don't know either if bf2 came out of the ideas of Desert combat....it isn't unlikely since the mod was probably one of the most played mods for bf1942.

TBH it looks like a backwards forgotten hope mod. However, reminiscent of early PR releases.

Best mod ever, then when I heard about DCR (Desert Combat Realism) I hated it xD, no but seriously DC was an epic mod, till BF2 ruined it, and now BF3 is going to ruin BF2 :'(

Let me help correct a few things first.

For starters, DICE brought up "Trauma Studios", the developers of DC to help make BF2 on September 1, 2004. Since then, they helped developer Battlefield 2 doing lots of POC work for them and generally helping out in lots of areas. But on June 7, 2005, Digital Illusions announced that they had shut down Trauma Studios, just before the release of BF2....

In January, 2006, the team behind Trauma Studios was hired by well-known publisher THQ to create a new internal development studio known as Kaos Studios. Their first game, Frontlines: Fuel of War, was released on February 25, 2008 and since have been working on the game "Homefront".

These are the facts.

Anyways I myself only played a little bit of DC in single player (only had a really shitty 56k back then, internet MP wasn't possible :p ) but was always good fun :D

Never seen that tralier before, the start was very well done but the rest of it is really just mashed up gameplay footage although it served its purpose :)

correct, PR ruined vBF2, at least for all the PR players out there

BF3 will only ruin vBF2. I doubt it will have that much of a long term impact on Project Reality as it simply dose not offer the same thing, just as vBF2 dosen't offer the same thing as PR.

Oh yea i remember the story now....

I bought Frontlines fuels of war because of what i knew about the developing team. I must say that I quickly left that game behind because it just felt to much of an Arcade game and even though all the gadgets where cool they where either useless or overpowered which made the game-play kind of imbalanced. I think BF2142 came at about the same time and it was a lot more fun even though EA really messed it up bad in the beginning....(the Initial shipped version couldn't run in multi-player at all)
Titan mode was a really fun play mode though until C4 noobs found ways of making it a pain in the ***....I got good at countering them though.

The idea behind FFOW was great....it just felt like the developers tried to dictate to much how they wanted us to play it...and not like the original sandbox feeling you got from desert combat.

I play BF2 all the time and I find it extremely enjoyable(although not that much since BF3 alpha). So no, this mod did not ruin BF2 as this mod would not be possible without BF2. I only play PR as a simulator, along with arma 2:co. If this mod did ruin BF2 then the million players playing BF2 would have gone to PR which they did not.

It was in my search for a DC2 mod I came across PR. There were some things I missed in BF2 that I remembered were included in DC. Simple things like binoculars and coordinated artillery (not that it wasn't in BF1942).
Honestly when I watched the first video of PR on Youtube and saw there were binoculars I downloaded the mod right away.

Back in the days I never went back to 1942 when I came across Desert Combat. Modern warfare is more appealing to me and I thought BF2 was the greatest game ever made when it came out although it lacked some good old stuff from 1942.
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading

That blackhawk at 2:31. Had that thing 16 mavericks, or some other missiles? If not, IMPLEMENT IN PR! :D

EDIT: Just did a bit of research. Those rockets were hellfires, and the official name of the helicopter is MH-60L DAP, Its awesome. found differnt loadouts here: ( http://www.guncopter.com/mh-60-dap/ ). It also has FLIR.

There was a realism mod for DC, called Desert Combat Realism, never played it. Although I know it's no where near where PR is :P .

Yeah we should, I've been playing it for a couple of weeks now, after a 5 year break :)

Gotta find my old battlefield 1942 S/N first.

Ahhh DC.. great times. Used to love the Basrah map, and the one where you assaulted the oil rig.

Well perhaps not for every player but for I would say my statement above applies to the majority of PR players from what I've seen.
