Newb in need of advice

Post by synario »

Hey. For some background info, a long time ago I tried to play Project reality but I didn't have a Headset/Mic. Now I do.

Only issue is, it seems I am only able to get ANY noise/sound to come out through either the speakers or the headset, not both. What I'm aiming for is for the game sounds to come out of the speaker and for the voices of other players to come in through my mic.

To go into detail, I'm using a dimension 4600, which I'm not quite sure of where which plug is where yet I have a decent idea. The front of the pc has two headset symbol plugs (they have a little picture of a headset above them- I guess these are "Line-out" plugs? Or no?). There is seemingly only one 'pink' plug (the one with the little mic picture above it, I'm guessing this is the "line in" one?).

There are also two green plugs in the back, one of which has the plug that the speaker wire goes into. I'm able to put the "headset" plug into this and have ALL sound come through the headset, but then my speaker doesn't work at all.

I would of simply put the 'headset' plug into one of the plugs on the front of the pc, the only issue is that the headset wires are set so that the headset and mic plugs are very close together. (In other words, all the plugs need to be either on the front of the pc or on the back).

There is another green plug immediately to the right of the speaker plug which is also green and has a 'opposite' symbol of the speaker plug. The speaker plug has a little multiple-wire symbol facing left, the right plug has the same symbol but it's facing to the right.

Putting the "headset" (green) plug into the plug right of the headset plug doesn't seem to fix the issue as sound still only comes out of the speakers, as well as other player's voices.

BEFORE I GO FURTHER, is the voice and game sounds both supposed to come out of the speaker? It would seem that voices would be easier to hear if they came out of the headset instead, separately from game-noises.

Will simply downloading mumble or Teamspeak fix this issue, or is it an issue at all?

Lastly, should I get mumble or Teamspeak. I'm leaning towards teamspeak seems it seems more legit. (shrug).

Get mumble, the best PR servers require its use. Get teamspeak as well, many communities (not only in this game) use it, it's a good program to have. But mumble is better for PR, and safe, don't worry.

As for seperating ingame VoIP and ambient/effect sound, that's impossible I'm afraid. It'll have to come out of the same output device. There's been a few threads about this recently, perhaps a search might come up with a work-around, but I don't think there is one.

Thanks. I'm just relieved to know everything's working as it's intended to.

Dimension 4600? That's a Pentium 4?!

We had one.. fond memories. The front audio jacks broke btw, so we had to use the back ones. If you want to split the signal so you have headphones and speakers just og on Amazon or eBay and buy a splitter link thingy. About 1 dollar i'd think.

What you can do is get Mumble in your headset and the rest through your speakers. But you'll need 2 sound-cards for that. Someone on these forums made it happen with there Teamspeak I believe

You don't need 2 sound cards for that; You select speakers as normal output and than set the output device on mumble and teamspeak to your headset. BF2 sounds go trough the normal output and mumble/teamspeak goes over the headset. But for mumble that would be kind of weird as local speech is supposed to simulate the sound coming from the in game character.

I can however say that running ingame sounds through your speakers while talking in your mic will cause the sound to go into your mic and thus making your voice less clear.
