Improved weapon cache markers for the Insurgents

Post by Asystole »

Some time ago I began to think that do new players actually realize weapons cache defence priorities because obviously not everyone reads the manual.

Blue diamond and a shield icon, normally I associate shield icons with defensive purposes but in Project Reality insurgency, generally the purple shield icon is not the place to be if theres a blue diamond on the map as well. Image

Logically the new player could think something like this: " Purple shield = thats the place I should defend!" But in PR this often results in being insulted by other players. And after that you learn to stay away from purple diamonds.

These kinds of situations could be easily avoided by having the shield icon on the KNOWN cache representing that it needs to be defended and replacing the unknown cache marker with a circle for example. Also adding an exclamation mark on the known cache and a question mark on the unknown cache. Below is a concept picture of this idea.

Any thoughts of this? Only a very little work would be needed for this improvement. I cannot imagine any cons with this.

Agreed, excellent idea. It would have to be done in the manner that it takes up the same (or less) space than the existing markers.

Good idea. Whatever helps in this area. Sounds like a simple thing to change.

Could this be why new players camp unknowns? Wish it was that simple, never heard a player putting up "but its a defense shield marker" excuse.

What would gameplay be like if we just got rid of unknown altogether? Maybe just have the known be known a minute or so ahead.
All to many times, INS-side knowing where caches are, seem to do more harm then good :/

Absolutely agreed. I'm playing PR since 0.5, but every time I return to PR after a break of a few months, I forgot this damn detail and have to check it out again.

Simply colour code it for our convenience, that'd already be enough. Red = in danger, blue = not in danger, then I don't even care whether it's a diamond, a shield or a sword or a guisarme.

100% agree, it'd give new players a chance to understand the gameplay a lot better

Nice idea. Always good to see these simple presentational adjustments sprout up... us vetrans take many things for granted.

Good idea, but the unknown cache marker could be signed "don't spawn noobs".

Good idea. And seems simple to implement. It could make newbies spawn less on unknowns. Of course they should have read the manual, but even I found it confusing in my first days of PR (you can't remember 100% everything you've just read). And in reality there are a lot of people who doesn't read the manual and prefer to learn from mistakes.

I used to have PR manual printed out next to me while playing.

Noobs need printers.

Haha this indeed. But it should also be a mine marker due to the aformentioned noobs mining it with nade traps.

Good idea.

IMHO unknown should become spawnable only when blufor know it or shortly before.

If someone wants to deploy hideout or mines he can go there before using a bike or car.

in which case the cache should not exist at all. Patroling blufor would essentially have freebees. Given this change, every blufor squad would just look for the enemy, then go search every where else constantly while keeping the INS team locked into that one area.
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.
