can the defending squad build mortars? That would make mortars avaible more often during downtime at the flag that needs defending, keep the defending squad busy too and make mortars avaiable on 4km maps as well, without taking 3 more people away from foot soldiers. You just have to keep in mind to take down the mortars when you move on to the next flag. Just putting this out there.
It does not mean the defending squad has to keep up a constant barrage of mortars, like a dedicated squad, but if mortars should be needed, they are there, 2 crates worth, plus what you have in the tubes. And if they are not needed that much, its better to build them and not need them, rather than not build them and find yourself lacking. Also that way you dont have a dedicated mortar squad with hardly anything to do if they are not called in that often during a game.
If there is no dedicated mortar squad

Re: If there is no dedicated mortar squad
Sounds like a good idea, but how about having the mortar squad follow the defending squad? That way, more people defending, easier logistics, and the squads get to see them all the time, meaning they will start remembering that they are there ready to support them.

If you destroy them afterwards it shouldn't be a problem.

The problem is when they do come under attack. That might be just when they need effective mortars, and if said mortars are taking fire or can't fire that close you might be screwed. Not to mention when the enemy overruns you and leaves the pits there, so you can't dig new ones.mockingbird0901 wrote:Sounds like a good idea, but how about having the mortar squad follow the defending squad? True. didn't think about that one just there. Maybe one more flag back then? Using one of the 'old' FOB's?Agemman wrote:The problem is when they do come under attack. Re: If there is no dedicated mortar squad
I do this, but I tend to only put up 1 of the mortars when I do, so that I have at least 4 guys defending properly, 1 guy as reserve/ammo for mortar and 1 guy actually on the mortar.
its just a bit annoying when other squads expect you to give them the same performance as a dedicated squad with 3 fully manned mortars, but some mortar is better than zero mortar.

It is not meant as a strategy for a dedicated mortar squad. More like, you are defending, nothing is happening, might as well build 2 mortar tubes just in case somone needs them.Agemman wrote:The problem is when they do come under attack. Is this something that came in .97, or did you miss type it and it's still 2?[R-DEV]Rudd wrote:3 fully manned mortars

Re: If there is no dedicated mortar squad
On 4KM that is a good idea I guess. But smaller maps rarely need it. The mortars can hit the whole map from almost any position. And the ability to continuously pound the enemy is more valuable than having them on a flag.mockingbird0901 wrote:True. didn't think about that one just there. Maybe one more flag back then? Having them on a flag might sometimes endanger supplies as well.
I quoted Mockingbird about his dedicated mortar squad mateCassius wrote:It is not meant as a strategy for a dedicated mortar squad. More like, you are defending, nothing is happening, might as well build 2 mortar tubes just in case somone needs them.

The sound of firing mortars is a magnet for enemies. And enemies are usualy close to your defending flag. You give away your position and having two of your squad members being instandly killed if attacked. I would only recommend that, if you have a strong defense on your flag (more than one squad) and the enemy is digged in at their flag.
