Hello every one I come here to talk about a widespread phenomenon; the I lead I gun syndrom. This is realy a good thing when you're in a combat/recon helicopter, cause you can't obviously control the flight and take time giving order or setting marker. Yeah i approve.

But when it comes to armored fighting vehicle, of any kind, most time you will see somone XYZ driving the vehicle and then Squad Lead manning the gun. Well this is a terrible thing. A real bad habit that people are used to. The most important person is not the one pulling the trigger, its the one that actualy have an overhaul control of the vehicle.

Pros of been SLCC:

  • Waymuch better point of observation
  • You bring you're vehicle where the CO/SL wanted too, or where it would provide the most effecient cover
  • You can set marker and scan further than gunner and way much easier
  • You're the one that lead that is realy responsable of the vehicle
  • You decide when and where pop smoke/drop ammo
Cons of been SLCC:

  • Inexperienced gunner can be a major issue (like people using APFSDS-T against INF and dont even fire a single burst of coax for the entire round)
  • You're the one that is responsable of the vehicle survivability (You gun i crew command, so stfu i dont wanna hear you shouting on me cause you realy wanted to kill that very single guy when you have absolutely no situational awareness)
  • You dont pull the trigger
  • You have to be very clear [Ex: RoE, Tactic]
I can recall endless moment of when been SLCC have make my vehicle survive way much longer, gunner crying to get back cause they realy wanted that "+1". Leading an armor squad is more than just gunning a vehicle or go fight on its own. Infantry is a fantastic shield man you wont beleive on how effective it can be :)
I know that post wont probly change anything... Well atleast ill feel better about it ;)

EDT: I almost forget, for all of you GUNNER that prefer to look at our friendly unit behind us, rather than scan where the enemy will more than likely come, wake up dude.

I agree that it makes more sense for the SL to be the driver, though I honestly don't mind whether I drive or gun. But definitely, it makes more sense for the SL to be the driver. Afterall, the SL should know what he's doing.

That's the reason why I like to drive cars when I am an infantry SL. I know where I wanna go, and I know which route. Though I should be able to communicate the driver where to go, I find it better for gameplay reasons if I just drive wherever I'm going (if it's a transport vehicle) or if I sit in the backseat when in an armed vehicle.

What's SLCC, by the way?

the issue I find is with asset squad rules, the person making the squad for the asset is sometimes doing it to get the chance to gun a vehicle :P

I almost nearly exclusively drive a vehicle. Gunning is a simple task, fun yes, but surprisingly I have the most fun watching my gunners tear stuff up!

Just like CAS and Mortars.... its fun to get thos kills/fly/destroy things.... but calling them in and watching a mortar land on a populated FOp or a Bomb land right inside a bunker... priceless!

Usually makes more sense, yes. Optics for spotting are generally better for the driver on MBTs. As a SL you will have to squadlead while gunning and you won't get your target as quickly in your sights if you are doing SL stuff at the same time.

The game would make more sense if they added optics to the third seat, sort of how the SPG-9 operates. You can play it unscoped for more situational awareness and then scope in when your target appears. Would this work on armor with .50cal instead of the SPG-9? So that the commander could get some optics/CROWS? Maybe should put this in suggestions...

It's just far more realistic to have 3 man crews on MBTs atleast.

OP is right.

being precise with where the vehicle goes, and being able to quickly mark targets using the 'attack' mark is very important when leading.

Why would it need an optic or a CROW on the 3rd seat ? Driver already have access to the CCITV :?
And why arguing about vehicle crew, if you want ultimate realism join the army men.

When I gun I always prefer the driver to be SL. Mainly so he can give me a marker when he sees a target, much more effective then just giving me a bearing. I also believe the gunner should be focused on the task at hand(the destruction of all opposition), while the driver has to be one step ahead of the enemy, in that sense the driver will need crucial intel from other SLs or COMM.

I have been gunner SL a few times in the past few months because I was obviously more experienced then the driver. I realize at that point I should switch spots, but one somewhat inexperienced driver I had turned out to be a beast at the helm when things got heated. Ended that round with an incredible kdr thanks to his sense to keep us alive. Kudos hellkat, was a hell of a round dude!

I actually have noticed that sometimes the driver of the tank gets more points at the end of the round than the gunner. I've witnessed that many times. So nowadays I really don't care whether I gun or drive.

But still absolutely agreed that squadleaders should ALWAYS drive the armour. It benefits the whole squad.

SL driving is common sense, more convenient, can multitask. SL gunning is waste of potential.

It used to be a must when 3D markers could be seen at unlimited range but even now it's always better to have driver/commander as SL.

A big advantage of being a SL driver is the driver assist points stacking up. On a good round the driver might have up to 4000 points!

Because that's how MBTs work. Commander commands the vehicle, not the driver. It would add realism and I'd like to think it'd be more fun.

And if you don't want it, you could always skip the third seat and have the driver be SL.

One thing in PR that applies probably the most to armor is that positioning is waaay more important than the actual shooting, which practically anyone can do, so it only makes sense that the driver is the one calling the shots.
This signature is here due to lack of imagination.
