Bombs:
-No longer acquire their own lazes. You must fly within 1000m (direct line) of the signature and wait for the audio prompt to drop a guided bomb. If there are multiple signatures in the area, it will acquire the closest one (you don't get any indication of which target the bomb is locking before release).
-A released bomb will arm after about three seconds of flight time. If it impacts before arming, it will release a smoke cloud and cause minimal damage.
-A released bomb will SELF-DESTRUCT after a given length/time of travel (about ten seconds or 1200m based on testing). Attempting to bomb a target beyond visual range will therefore generally result in a miss.
In practice, the best way to guarantee impact (unless flying A-10 or Su-25 due to their slow airspeed; bombing there is generally straightforward) is to be flying about 650 altitude with nose pointed directly at the target location as the target comes into view. When you see the laze, pull up about 15 degrees, thus slowing your closing rate to the target, and wait for the audio cue (takes about a second and a half from when you see the laze). Drop on cue and immediately bank away. Do not deviate more than 20 degrees from the target before releasing the bomb, or there's a chance the bomb will overshoot the target. Also do not have the nose facing directly at the target as you release the bomb, as the bomb (which will have been dropped closer to the target) may not have enough time to arm before impact.

this is why i am a rifleman...much less complicated...
BUUUTTTTT i know from working with fighter squads that they like to drop from higher altittudes as it works better most of the time

I've seen bombs switch targets in mid-flight so that means that they can find a lase after the drop.

Yes, Comedian: much like heatseeking missiles, it requires them to have first launched in the "locking on to something" state. With serious practice, you could set up so that with some crafty spotting work, one could guide a bomb from medium altitude directly into, say, a Kashan bunker.

Heatseekers can find a target without a lock tone. They need a second or two to start tracking heat sources. Thats why you can fire a manpad without a lock and still hit what you were aiming at.
