[WinXP] Reinstalling OS on a Non-OEM HDD

Post by Spartan0189 »

So basically, I'm helping my younger brother who apparently made his computer FUBAR. Basically, this computer was a hand me down from my older brother who gave it to him after he built his own rig.

I'm looking on how to reinstall Windows XP Home Premium (x86) without a disk (Since I don't have it/don't know where it is, but I do have a Genuine Windows key (Still on the case))

Now, you're probably thinking, "Why doesn't he upgrade to Windows 7" well, I don't really have the money for Windows 7 right now, but that's not the point.

I remember the OEM HDD failing on my brother, and he bought a new one, except, I have no clue how the heck he reinstalled XP.

Any help/replies would be nice

The XP key is tied to the motherboard serial number, so you're good on that part.

Now you need to go on facebook and beg for someone to let you borrow a OEM WinXP Home Premium (X86) installation Disc.

Alternatively, you might have a restore partition at the end of the disk, which would be great.
YOu press a certain key, usually F1 or F8 at boot, and it boots into the restore partition and then restores the boot drive to factory fresh. If you give more info, specifically the OEM manufacturer, (Dell, HP, gateway, etc) we can give you a bit more help.
