Which HDD is better for use as primary HDD and quickness.

Post by Ramjali »

Can someone analyse which HDD is better and faster-

I have a HDD which i bought some time ago
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (500GB) - ST3500418AS
Datasheet - ST3500418AS Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 500GB Hard Drive | Seagate

PassMark - Seagate ST3500418AS - Price performance comparison

And a new HDD which I bought with new components -
- Seagate Barracuda Green (2TB) - ST2000DL003
Seagate ST2000DL003 Barracuda Green 3.5-inch 2TB SATA 6 Gb/s Drive (64MB Buffer,5900RPM): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
Datasheet - ST2000DL003 Barracuda LP SATA 3Gb/s 2TB Hard Drive | Seagate

PassMark - Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 - Price performance comparison - I dont think this link had the correct HDD

I am confused to which one is better, as my old HDD has the better spin speed but the newer HDD has the better SATA interface and cache and new features (Advanced format 4K ?????). Which one would be better as the main drive for boot speeds and gaming generally (ie BF2 & ARMA 2 PR mod) ?????

Also if possible can you explain to me why ???

You're not going to see big differences in load times between those drives, it might be measurable but almost certainly unnoticeable.

Go for the 7200Rpm 500Gb as your primary ( bootable - OS ) drive for its seek & write times and higher RPM spin and higher data transfer.

Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s - Random read seek time <8.5ms
Random write seek time <9.5ms

VS

Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB - Random read seek time <12.0ms
Random write seek time <13.0ms

No need to worry about Sata 2/3 as your 2TB HDD is ''too slow'' to use even part of the bandwith of Sata 3. ( unless you're using SSD ) :p

The ''green drive'' is great for its big capacity and quiteness due to lower plate spin-Rpm

I would highly recommend researching a Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD. It's consistently rated as one of the fastest 7200rpm drives out there.

(this is if you want serious speed, little off topic from your question I understand)
