Checkerboard artifacts
Recently I started having checkerboard artifacts when my GPU temp reaches around 80?C, this never happened before, 80-85 has always been regular stress temp. Is this the sign of a dieing card?

Re: Checkerboard artifacts
I've been looking around and seems like those are regular temps for HD4870x2.

Indeed those 48xx series cards were notorius of having high temps with stock cooler. If the card dies altogether, (and this goes to everyone) try setting your home oven to 190C and take off all heatsinks, coolers, and so on and bake in in there for like 6-8 minutes. Loose/bad solders melt and it may give it some more lifetime. Ofc the capacitors on the card will suffer the most so don't overdo it. I know ton of people who have saved/given morelifetime on those 4-series cards with that trick. It's worth trying if it's dead anyways.
This trick also applyis to any dead electronics, mobos, gfx cards, etc.
Those artifacts are a sign of dieng card or loose solder somewhere which becomes loose when the solder expands in heat.
Some succesfull trys and more specific insturctions. http://www.overclockers.com/forums/show ... p?t=606658

Does ATI refurbish cards or something like that? Would prefer sending it to them before it dies.

Re: Checkerboard artifacts
Hmm, just set my eyes on a new cooler, Accelero XTREME 4870x2. Got some good reviews, people say it cools soooo much better than stock (clearly - one guy said he got 60C under stress with this cooler, I get 85C with stock). Problem is I can't find one anywhere. Does anyone know of a place where one is available?
In the meanwhile I will have to do...

Re: Checkerboard artifacts
Looks like its discontinued but try emailing some of the stores, might be possible to order it.
Meanwhile Ive found this one its 4870 compatible ARCTIC COOLING CPU COOLING FAN ARCTIC COOLING Accelero TWIN TURBO Pro VGA Cooler
What you might do is try disassembling it cleaning any dust and reapplying thermal compound materials. That might help. If it doesn't then its time for a new card
EDIT: Check this one if you card is manufactured by ATI-AMD http://onlineservices.amd.com/icssb2c_a ... anguage=EN
If not look at you card manufacturer website

Will do this. Thanks.MaSSive wrote:What you might do is try disassembling it cleaning any dust and reapplying thermal compound materials. That might help.

When it starts flashing black and white squares on the screen in PR and Metro 2033, if I alt-tab out and back into the game it stops, but doesn't work on Crysis. I dunno what the hell is going on.

I don't see any problem with this kind of temperature, these dual core cards heat a lot.Stealthgato wrote:I've been looking around and seems like those are regular temps for HD4870x2.
It could be an issue seen in a lot of cards these few last years, the gpu temperature reading are ok but the 3d card power supply heat too much and the temparture radiate on other parts (memory chips, whatever is close to the power supply)
Look at this test, thermal reading of 4870 show that some parts of the card can heat up to 100-120c?... and it's the single core version. (90-100c? is still fine, 120-130 is *not*) Add some dust on your card and you got a 130c? memory chip with a lot of artifacts.
