Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family - good enough for Bf2PR?

Post by wuschel »

Hi,

any chance a VGA of Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family can run Bf2 :P R? I had a Lenovo T61 with a Nvidea Quadro 140M, which could handle the game quite well. Unfortunalty, it burned down, and my replacement T61 has the Intel chipset inside.

Opinions? Answers?

Cheers,

I'm going to say that it's not worth playing PR on that. I don't have much experience with intel video cards but it does run worse than ur old quadro. in the past, the intel video cards couldn't even start BF2 but with newer intel drivers it could run bf2 but not very well. and PR is quite more demanding than BF2...so..i say it's worth trying if you really want to play PR, but don't expect miracles.

Thanks for Your reply.

With 4GB RAM and the Quadro, my old notebook could run PR just fine on 1400x1050 with medium to high settings. But that time I still had a 128 MB dedicated memory 3D chipset card, even if it was on the low end.

You are probably right, and the Intel VGA is not going to make it. The thing is, with 128 players, I would even play on low :)

It is just an this article that puzzled me and gave me some hope: blogs.intel.com

On the other hand, this has been taken from this website:
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
Battlefield 2* game is playable on the Intel? G965 Express Chipset and Mobile Intel? GM965 Express Chipset. Based on extensive testing, Intel suggest using the following game setting values for an optimal experience on this game:

Video options:

* Display Mode = 800x600 @ 60Hz
* Overall Quality = Low (becomes Custom)

Custom quality:

* Terrain = Low
* Effects = Low
* Geometry = Low
* Texture = Low
* Lighting = Low
* Dynamic Shadows = Off
* Dynamic Light = Off
* Anti-Aliasing = Off
* Texture Filtering = Low
* View Distance Scale = 75%
Sounds scary.

i got one of these cards with a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (+3gb Ram) and let me tell you, it runs like shite!

I cant even look up from the ground during the new maps (Kokan etc) without super lag, hence my Temporary Retirement from PR.

Although as you are getting it as a replacement, if you have a good processor im sure it will be okay, but one more thing -

When you run BF2 for the first time, your gonna be missing everything from the lower left corner of your screen in terms of Hud/UI. The game will still be as it should, i.e everything seems normal. except you will have no health bar, and the Support/Engineer kits will not be present (at least I think its those kits). Oh and when you run your mouse over the area, there will no longer be a cursor (when viewing map etc)

To fix this you have to go into the registry and, well gimme a bit of time and ill try and find the solution for this for you.

EDIT - Here goes - keep this safe for when it arrives!

- run regedit.exe and find all the entries called ~BF2.exe
- all of these had values set to 1, I changed that to 0

Heres an example of it happening in 2142 with some people

Hello Welsh,

You were right. The frame rates do not look good at all.. the horror. Thank You for You help regarding the registry fix.

I guess we are on the same island now. Marooned.

Cheers!

I got amd laptop from dell not knowing that laptops suck so bad, but it does ok i'll say with pr. My settings are all low or off on detail except texture medium and geometries at medium.

My resolution is 1366x768
viewing distance is 100%
and i have configured the CCC or graphic options thought trial and error to do pretty good.

My specs are dual core amd 2.1mhz and 4gb ram 1333hz and ati mobility radeon 4250 with 384mb vram windows 7 x64

Now that i think about it i am able to run arma 2 just barely but it sucks so bad after i figured its unplayable for multiplay i don't play it anymore. But i just got it because i have steam and it was 8.00$. And i just got MOH Airborne for 2.50$ but its also too laggy in multiplayer.

Hello Kerpus,

after reading Your posting I decided to have another go at BF2/BF2-PR.

Right now, it very much looks like that my system can handle BF2 vanilla at 1400*1050 resolution with medium textures/geomatries and 100% viewdistance.

If find this quite strange, as I did observe a much worse performance the first time. My guess is that my graphic card drivers have not been configured properly before the first test, which was carried out right after a fresh system install. It could also be that I was using an old driver, as the new ones are supposed to be able to handle games of the caliber of BF2 - if one believes internet postings and articles on the subject.

However, as WelshManDan has correctly described, I am also suffering from the bug that cripples the equipment display.

Unfortunalty, I have no time right now to fool around, as I have to hand in my thesis and a list of other things. I got quite scared when my notebook transformed itself into a heating element after one short round of BF2... Since this was precisely the reason why my old Lenovo T61 notebook died: the olde NVidea card degraded at higher operational temperatures to the point that it could not send out a proper display signal anymore. While my current T61 does have an Intel GPU, I am not going to risk anything right now. However, I am sure that I will not be able to resist to make the check at some point in the future. If anyone is interested about that, anyway.. (:

Cheers!

Its an incredibly weird bug, especially as you can still play and it looks exactly like the normal game, just without 2 or 3 kits.

Its such an easy solution I would do it ASAP, so you remember. Literally just regedit, search, change value. Ba-da bing, ba-da boom, your done. Capiche?
