[0973] Mi-8 Collision model

Post by Zoddom »

Hey,
yesterday on Beirut Alt, I noticed taht something is wrong with the collision model of the Cow. at first my squad mate landed on the ship, and suddenly started slipping forward and backwards before crashing. at first i thought hed probably pressed S too hard, but after some time the same happened to me, and i only touched A or D, because i wanted to turn around on deck. At first I had no idea what happened, but then after I wanted to land on a street in the city, next to a tree, my helicopter somehow touched that tree and was pushed to the side, but luckily I could stabilize it and make it back to the carrier for repairs. then, when i wanted to turn around on the deck again, I saw how sparks began to spray between my helicopter and the one next to me, even though they didnt really touch. This resulted in my helo being pushed into the deck and sliding fast sidewards then turning upside down 50 metres behind the carrier, which I incredibly managed to turn around jsut 1 metres above the water and get it back on deck again. My heart was beating like a GAU-8A....

The collision model seems to be bigger than the model itself, especially in front of the wings, i think. (Had a similar problem with the german HUEY on silent eagle some time ago, i think theres still some thread existing)
UPDATE:
That problem on silent eagle was with the cow ! But that time i though it was a problem of the guard tower model, heres the link:

SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG !

Mi-8 is going to be replaced with a new model anyways. *fingers crossed for next release*

^ hah! marvelous

gonna have to add fastropes pretty soon, otherwise people will keep getting their rotors caught in things

so there is always collision for that yellow part of the rotor? or just when its not moving? because you can walk on the rotor of any chopper if its static iirc. if that model also applies when its moving, than its interesting to see that you actually can be pushed/damaged by anything which is not even touching the chopper itself. this should be fixed imho.

That posted image is for how the chopper interacts with the world, statics and other vehicles. The soldier/bullet collision mesh is different and has 4 rotors, rather than the patch.

I don't think it needs fixing, it's the only chopper with a semi realistic sizing on the rotors. All the other choppers can fly between trees/buildings that would generally result in the rotors disintegrating... so the Mi-8 is the only one that *doesn't* need fixing, technically :)

My suggestion (if they have the original 3ds/mesh file) would be to make the rotor collision thing more of a box than a plane, so that it doesn't do that carrier thing where the two planes start interacting, resulting in one being pushed down/up and the other in the opposite direction... basically what happened in the first post (I think).

Ye, a few of the vBF2 choppers do have a rotor col as part of there main col1 mesh, the Z-10 is the other one I know has one (although thought it was the only one that had one) but like the Z-10, its very small..

There is a plan to edit all the chopper col meshes to include a rotor col into all of the chopper's main col1 mesh but this is a lot of work for choppers we don't have the original max scenes for so doubt it will happen any time soon.

Agreed. This is something that really bugs me, helicopters going places they shouldn't be able to (in particular videos on youtube of people flying through the cargo plane; or the cranes on mutrah).

yes of course they shouldnt be able to in Project Reality.
But having 5 helicopters that can and one that cant isnt really helpful, especially not when nobody knows that the cow actually has that rotor blade collision thing...

their own fault for not behaving realistically really :P but as Rhino says, it'll get addressed

which is the reason why we haven't applied the col mesh updates to the choppers we easily can do it for. The Mi-8's one is so small that its taken this long for anyone to really notice it...

Be thankful it isn't the size of the one I made for the Z-10 :p (which isn't in the release, was just a POC, but showed how much work it took to do)

Now that's the kind of col mesh thingy I want on all the choppers

yep ^^ rhino that looks amazing
edit: a question that just came to my mind:
is it possible to do it that way, that if anything hits the rotor col mesh (red), the helo gets disabled directly? So we have to different collision types for the vehicle and the rotor

can't ensure it being disabled at the moment, but the plan is to have a material that if it touched any surface, the chopper would get very damaged, hence why its red and not yellow like the rest of the chopper :p

Speaking of which the tail rotor should also have it, forgot that one :p

hm when you say very damaged, would it be possible that the helicopter could explode it the rotor hits a tree?
Because thats not the way I meant (and really would like to see), I thought of disabling the chopper, when hit in the rotor. So cut the engine or block the controls, because a rotor hit itself doesnt make a helicopter explode, but the crash it causes.

you know what i mean?

Wouldn't it just cause critical damage and make the chopper go down, like if you're hit by AA and catch fire?

Yes, my post says that :p

Although the plan was to have a "slight tap" would mean possibly only a bit of damage, where a full on nose dive into a building would result in blowing up :p

That's a pretty funky collisionmesh. Don't think I've seen one like that before!

no, you dont seem to understand what i mean, rhino neither i think.

lets only think about the rotor. if it is hit it gets destroyed, but nothing more happens that could instantly decrease the helicopters "health".
So if the pilot is lucky enough to land it (softly enough) even with a crippled rotor, the helicopter itself wouldnt get destroyed and could be repaired, if im right.

so in PR, i wanted to have it like when the rotor is hit, engine power cuts off and the controls are being disabled / going crazy (not sure if thats impossible), but the helo wouldnt directly blow up. if the pilot is lucky, he can do a crash landing, and everyone could get out safely.

Now, it sounds to me that when the rotor gets hit, the helo gets massive damage, or even blows up directly, but at least will bleed health, so it will surely be destroyed after some time.
but i think there should at least be a small chance to repair a helo when the rotor is damaged.
