Re: Whino needs an upgrade
My parts arrived the other day and finished my upgrade/reinstall now
All seems to be working well although one thing we all missed was that this mobo dosen't support any IDE devices which meant that I had to throw out my old DVD drives and buy a new one, which cost me an extra ?10 in next day delivery but other than that looks like we checked all the boxes
A little worried about my SSD thou, as I've already used 1/2 of the drive and I've yet to install ARMA2 and put some other stuff on it, also a little hard to get in the habbit of remembering to instal to E: for most programs
Should be good for space thou as long as I keep a check on things
The SSD itself seems to be working fine thou, although was expecting to see more of a diffrence but aint really strained it yet. Only real diffrence I've seen so far is the loading times of PS and Max which have been dramatically reduced but other than that, ain't noticed much of a diffrence so far
Cheers guys for all the help!

Re: Whino needs an upgrade
I don't know if CD/Steam allows you, but using the GamersGate software, I was able to install ArmA on my secondary HDD as my SSD is only 60gbs. Very very frustrating to have such little capacity so I am in serious consideration of purchasing another SSD and then use raid 0.
WinDirStat is also a very good program to see what's taking up storage and WHERE! I find it quite useful actually
Cheers,
Michael

Right quick review on the Force Series? GT 120GB SATA 3 6Gb/s Solid-State Drive for any of you that are interested.
Been using it for a few months now and my biggest worry about getting a SSD, especially one like this would be how much it would degrade over time.
Well recently I've filled it my SSD up quite a few times to pretty much full, where I've then had to send over a load of my .max files etc to my backup HDD to free up space. Freeing up used up space like this in most SSD info topics says that you will find your SSD slows down significantly due to the way it works, but tbh, I've not noticed any difference in speed from when I first got my SSD. The main thing for me is that it is saving my huge .max scene files pretty damn quickly still and it still loads up programs like Photoshop in around 2 seconds so I'm very happy with it
Only thing for me is that I probable should have got the 180gb or 240gb version for me as space is a bit of an issue which is taking a little bit of micro management to keep freed up now and again
But again that's mainly due to the large .max backup files I have and my huge "pr_edit"
Hope this helps

Synthetic benchmarks will really be the only way to be able to tell in the long run, as the access times won't degrade *that* significantly as far as I know. As long as trim/GbgMan is doing it's job properly, the performance impact should be negligible for years to come.'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino;1683575']Right quick review on the Force Series? If you do want to keep track of it though, use something like crystal disk mark and benchmark it once every few months, with just a 100MB test or whatever, 2-3 passes. You can then track any degradation in the throughput at different read/write sizes.
Here's some benchmarks of some older SSDs (from 2010)
Corsair P64

Gskill Falcon II 64

Re: Whino needs an upgrade
I couldn't really care less on the stats of it, the main thing that matters to me is how the drive feels to use and that its still fast, which it is
But going on many reviews I read this type of SSD was meant to degrade seriously fast, mainly once its space had been all used and then you where re-using old space which other things had occupied before, but ye, so far, not noticed anything which is what I wanted

This is a great processor, i'm sure you will love it. Of course you know it's unlocked so overclocking is simple. I have mine at 3.8ghz on air stable and great temps under load.'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino;1618622']
