Good, but cheap...

Post by Gaspar212 »

Hi there, once again...

So, i still cant play Project Reality because i dont have a PC to do it...

So, can you guys help me finding a PC, laptop if possible, that is cheap and can run PR smoothly...
I dont care if it will only run PR smoothly at low graphics, i just want one to play..

Also, if you can put computers avaible in Europe, and even Portugal, i would thank you...

Moved this to the Hardware section, where it should feel more at home. ;)

Some basics to go by:

Usually get a second generation Core i3 or i5

At least 3GB of RAM

For graphics I usually say NVIDIA, may have to do some research on performance.

ASUS usually has a pretty good price/performance ratio.

Last yeat I bought a gaming laptop from MAINGEAR which is a custom desktop and laptop maker in the U.S. I believe they will ship to Europe (If not ask because I think the owner is Portugese from looking at his name (maybe Brazilian though)). 15" models start at $1,300 and should be able to run smoothly. You customize as you like

They are big and heavy and they only have about 30 mins of battery when not plugged in but I have been very happy with it.

What is your max budget? If you can afford it, the build Cossack posted is very good for a budget PC. It will max out the PR settings no problem and will be able to play almost all of the upcoming games.

Indeed, need your budget in pounds or euros. Dollars will not work in Europe because in US parts are for 10 or even 30% cheaper.

GT 430 is derp. Than better is 9600GT or 9800GT. And its already pre-build so it means you pay a bit above its actual price.

Here is what I got from same web store:

CPU: Intel i3-2100

GPU: Palit 550Ti 1 GB

Motherboard: ASUS P8H67 INTEL H67 SK1155 REV3.0

RAM: G.SKILL SNIPER DDR3 2X4GB 1333MHZ CAS9 1.5V LOW VOLTAGE

Drive: ASUS DVR 24X DLAYER SATA

HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLUE 500GB 16MB SATAIII (6GB/S)

PSU: CORSAIR CX-500W 12CM BUILDER SERIES V2 80PLUS

This whole thing for 497.9 ? If I were you, I would go with this one. There are some pretty badass parts here ;)

Do you think that any of these laptops will do:

Toshiba Satellite C660D-144

Toshiba Satellite C660-1WV

Toshiba Satellite C660-1MF

Im not very good chosing PCs but, im following your offers...
I will "catch" all the offers together, compare perfomance/price and select one...

From a quick look, the graphics on all three of those models look very low end (1 & 3 are integrated). I'll see if i can find some benchmarks.

All three is not suitable for gaming, no where close. Those parts what I selected just kicks those laptops. Third one is only with good CPU, but on Intel GPU graphics you will able to reach 15 fps on everything low.

This is ABSOLUTELY false. I have a laptop of very similar specs and it can run PR with max settings and 8x AA while still getting very high frame rates.

However, if you are comfortable with building your own PC, Cassocks suggestion is the best choice. If you do not need a laptop specifically and can't build your own computer, then my original suggestion is the most logical.

well, here is proof, if you dont believe me:
Psyrus wrote:I have done some stress testing of PR with the HD3000 IGP and I can tell you that even @ 800x600, all settings minimum (0xAA etc) that on the majority of the maps you won't be breaking more than 30fps, and on the "fps killer" maps, it struggles above 10-15fps. Basically, Korengal, big chunks of Ramiel, Fallujah, Fool's Road, Asad Khal, Beirut, Gaza, Karbala, Lashkar and Muttrah were unplayable, even just as a medic.

Lots of Archer, Kashan, Al Basrah were fine, but also had sub 20fps moments.

Haven't had an opportunity to FPS test any of the other maps.

In short, buy a super cheap laptop and save up & build yourself a gaming desktop because the HD3000 is not sufficient for PR.
Psyrus tested the HD3000 and its not suitable. So, check your laptops specs again mate. ;-)

I would say Psyrus is absolutely wrong. I have the Intel HD 3000 IGP in my laptop, and PR runs MAX. Honestly, I don't care what Psyrus says since I KNOW it is sufficient to run PR.

However, you failed to mention the CPU Psyrus had. Mine is running on a dual core 4 thread 1st Gen i5. This may have something to do with the results.
