Rememberance/Veterans Day 2011

Post by Rhino »

Today, as many of you are aware, is Remembrance Day, or for those of you in America, Veterans Day where we commemorate the sacrifices made by those, in conflicts past and present, to preserve the freedom which we take for granted every day. So although Project Reality is just a game, let us not forget the men and women who have fought in the past, and those on the front lines today.

This year, Remembrance/Veterans Day falls at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011 (11-11-11-11). To mark this once in a lifetime Remembrance/Veterans Day, we at Project Reality decided to go that extra mile by creating the Camp Bastion Memorial which will stand ingame, in Camp Bastion on our upcoming map, Sangin.

The real Camp Bastion Memorial is dedicated to those who have fallen in the line of duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan and is used as a focal point for the Vigil services before those soldiers are repatriated back to the UK as well as of course the annual Remembrance Day services in Camp Bastion.

The PR Camp Bastion Memorial model and textures where created by [R-DEV]Rhino and the memorial site done by [R-DEV]Dr Rank.

We also feel this is a rather fitting day to reveal how much we raised for Help for Heroes (registered charity number: 1120920) at the Project Reality Convention 2011 (PR CON 2011) earlier this year where many like-minded Project Reality players all got together to play some good old PR, as well as some other games with all profits from the event going to charity!

Thanks to all of you who took part, donated towards the event and the event's sponsors Alpha-Networks, Barclay's Bank, Templant Hire & GLL. Together we raised for Help for Heroes a total of:

(Help for Heroes event number: 20010731-6531-1870)
This entirety of the money raised has gone towards helping support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country.

Thanks again for all your support!

If I see anybody doing anything to this memorial other than saluting it I will be tempted to TK them.. Won't do it, as it's sort of counter productive in my mind, but I will be tempted... In my mind these people deserve all the respect they can get, whether one agrees with them being there or not.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

All brits should salute this before they play the map, would be awesome.

RIP all those that have served and given the ultimate sacrifice so we may live on in peace at home.

That is very cool, great work.

I have a quote for everyone, it sums up the idea of veteran's day/remembrance day very well.
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to their country, for an amount "up to, and including my life."

im pretty sure nearly all u guys have ur information about what war is out of some nice hollywood movies.
playin a game is not quit the same like being a soldier/henchman for some strange interests.

being a soldier and killing some innocent is half as heroic as u might think...

there are for sure soldiers from some countries involved in some ot these days wars - sending there time in foreign countries doing useles stuff and they feel like a hero when the came back home - but most of them never saw the real face of war. and they are to brainwashed to realize what is realy going on.
or what they are fighting for.

i like playin game like pr - i like the tactics and teamwork and ..... and .....
but I KNOW it is an game - do U still know this???

now im looking forward for ur replays - will it be a constructive response or just FLAMING (but remember - the more u falme the less ur IQ)???

No this is flaming-Thermis

Here's a nice documentary about one of those brave people who fought and died for freedom. Funny thing cause 11th of November is also a Polish Independence Day.

Lest We Forget ? A. N. Cole
Shall we ever forget when the boys marched away,
To fight for their King and their home,
To fight with a smile on their lips and their faces aglow,
And no thought of the days yet to come?
Shall we ever forget their whistle and shout,
Their songs and their laughter and fun?
To them t?was a ?joke? and a ?spree? and a ?lark?,
Till they came face to face with the Hun.
Shall we ever forget when they took up their place,
In the trenches so muddy and cold,
When ?bully and biscuit? was ?dinner and tea??
Yet their spirits were brave and still bold.
Shall we ever forget when the news arrived home,
That a loved one had fallen out there?
The sun seemed to set and the birds ceased to sing,
And the future loomed dark with despair.
Shall we ever forget when peace was declared,
And the nation went mad with delight?
Yet for many t?was sad: no home-coming for them;
Still they joined in the shouts with their might.
Shall we ever forget our glorious dead
Who gave freely all they could give?
No! in marble and granite, still more in our hearts,
We will praise them as long as we live.

If ANYONE shoots around this, at this, wants to bunny hop around this like a herp derp, or do ANYTHING but stand there, saluting or just standing there is okay, I WILL personally Teamkill EVERYONE and ANYONE that is doing it. I am NOT joking, i don't care if I kill 31 team members I will do it.

I'm not taking sides here or there and coming from Finland I have the utmost respect for war veterans and their sacrifices, believe me.

However, the fact that we were allied with hitler and fought the russians for our independence and later fought the germans too really puts things into perspective.
War is a terrible thing, and romantisizing it or appraising everyone who took part in one as heroes doesn't really help.

Things aren't so black and white...
...and only red and blue in games ;-)
PR has a fantastic and unparalleled community of very like-minded players, however our nationalities and ideologies vary a lot. Therefore this is not perhaps the best place to be overly patriotic or a zealous advocate of any ideology.

This is a very touchy subject I know but it had to be said.
