Is a mic an absolute must-have in order to play PR?

Does this apply to every situation or are there playing styles where it isn't necessary using a mic, for example trans heli pilot or medic? If all you do is transport people do you need a mic for that?

A medic should always have a mic. He needs to be able to ask questions relevant to getting people up like 'can you cover me' or 'Are the bad guys down?' since he's usually not directly observing the enemy if he's a good little medic. But more importantly its to tell the guy he's getting up which way to go when he's revived since usually they've gone down in a line of fire.

"When I get you up go SW" or something similar. I always give lots of instructions to the people I've reviving.

If there's a class that can get by without a mic its Rifleman. Its the generic class that requires the least amount of communication. Its also the one that you usually give to guys without mics cause if you need a kit you want to be able to converse with the guy who's holding down something you consider vital to your squad.

I am very opinionated while I'm playing. If the SL is stalling on a decision or we're in a bad spot I'm usually pissing and moaning "We gotta move or we're gonna get fucked".

Back seat driver! I've been in some poor squads on the occasions I didn't lead, but I see it as an insight in to what I was like before I progressed (shut up you at the back, I did progress).

Advantage of not being SL is that everything becomes so easy, you have about 3 times as much time to consider things and just observe everyone (it amuses me as I feel like a teacher sitting at the back of a class disguised as one of the kids, just watching the situation and the interesting behaviour of the squad members - Instead of my mind being full of timing, comms, tactics, logistics & squad discipline).

PR isnt PR without a michrophone. If a person joins my squad, i yell at them to buy a mic. I say, "Stop playing PR right now, get up, go to town, buy a mic, come back and rejoin my squad"

Any squads with VOIP, or MUMBLE in the name will boot you as they specify the need for microphones. If you want to have the full PR experience you absolutely need a mic, especially if you want to be an asset whore. Come out of your shell and play the game the way it was meant to be.

Si a headset with a mic and surround can be had for 15 bucks. And. pretty good one. Dont go buying medusa or the like. Unless you go for something like sennheiser the quality wont change

Exactly those 3 roles, plus APC crewman, Sniper and SL are THE roles to use a mic!!!

I am really sorry for you buddy but like I said earlier, if you are considering to play PR I promise you:

Buy a Mic, deal with family and NEVER regret it!!!

As long as you listen to your SL/Comm, its fine. I've seen people leading squads without mics and they do a fine job. I've been in "ENG VOIP" squads without talking and it was fine, nobody said nothing to me because i followed orders.

Well, maybe a few "Yeah"s, or "Okay"s. I see people talk alot, i dont. Language barrier ftw eh?

Its MUST for trans heli. People will be calling AA locations, where they want to go...etc.

Simple fact: PR is shit whitout mic.

You don't get audio through your microphone. You will still be able to hear what people say. You will also be able to look at your map to see where people have marked AA etc.

Yes, a mic is necessary. Even if you are a good player, people will not want to play with you if you don't have a mic.

No you don't but not having one is a handicap.
You also will be kicked allot and can be frustrating when SL's don't bother to read what your typing.


Its strang as with no mic you really do feel like you have a disability in this game.

I would say that it is an idea to have a mic so then you can use mumble and VOIP to communicate with your squad and team but it is good to have a mic but still works if you don't have one just need to be a fast typer.

PR is about teamwork and teamwork is about efficient communication. So yeah its a must have if you want to experience PR to the fullest.

I think if you start playing PR seriously you do not wanna play it without a microphone.
You will miss so much fun and mumbling that you will force yourself to go to a shop and buy a headset.

A headset isn't really that big invest. Everyone should be able to afford.

Just to mention also that SL's don't read Teamchat very often if they are on Mumble. So much is gping on that you are generally using your eyes to see the enemy/terrain and your ears/voice to communicate. It's not necessarily a sign of a 'bad' SL not to see Squad Chat, just a busy one.

It's not the mic that's important. It's the amount of information that is exchanged between members of a squad, squads, and with the CO.

You'd better be very quick at typing what you want to say because sometimes you don't have the time to stop and type.
