If you type to communicate then it is just a matter of time until you die because your hands were busy.

I always play without a mic, the game can be fun anyways if you find a good squad. You know, one that is friendly for newbies.
Commo-rose and textchat are enough for casual playing, but for more serious stuff you need a mic.
Of course I have a mic but I'm a quiet person. I can't talk to computer when there are people around.

Arrrgh god help me if I hear anyone recommending spamming the Commo Rose and giving our position away! Don't spam it! Don't use it!

Comma rose can be useful when you are in a safe area, but at that rate since we're not in any danger why not just type out "Can you give me a patch?"
Only thing worse then the commarose spammers are the blue guys who open fire right as your squad starts to move through an exposed area.
Do yourself, and all of your teammates a huge service and use a microphone.

I can't stand it. Its the stupidest thing anybody can do. Its free intel to the enemy. Like using the "Frag Out" one is like saying "Hey enemy, make sure you're in cover right?". With mumble now there's no excuse to do that. If you have an ounce of situational awareness and squad discipline nobody will be throwing a nade into a room with the risk of someone running in after it.Mikemonster wrote:Arrrgh god help me if I hear anyone recommending spamming the Commo Rose and giving our position away! If you can't talk cause you're afraid, get over it. The internet is anonymous. Dickheads use this fact to be huge ******** in ways that you could never be in real life. Productive PR players should learn to use this to become uber leet badasses on the internet where in real life they're scrawny tame acne farms.
If your family gets annoyed if you make noise, close the door, or just talk softly. If your mic is set up right you don't need to speak loud at all, especially with mumble's excellent voice quality.
Mumble is pushing the game forward, and mumble doesn't work if you don't have a mic. Chew on that.
Casual or not, no mic is epic fail in PR. Its like being a casual fps gamer and not having a mouse. Protip: your mic is a more deadly weapon than your rifle.

I dont mind ppl who don't have mics, as long as they don't play as medic. Nothings more annoying than trying to be a medic when you cant respond to all the people calling you, and its equally annoying to the people who need a medic. Playing as a squadleader, or crewing a vehicle is also very hard to do without a mic, and most vehicle squads would kick players without a mic instantly. And you can't play on mumble required servers (best servers in my opinion).
Bottom line, theres too many reasons to get a mic.

If you want max teamwork, and to be able to utilize yourself to the limit, then yes; you need a mic. Typing is to distracting both for you, and you squadmates. VOIP is faster, more precise, and let's you stay in the fight while talking.
Not a must, but definateley important.

Re: Is a mic an absolute must-have in order to play PR?
I think the question should be "why do people start PR without a mic or mumble?"
If you don't have mumble or are unwilling to get it, you receive an unceremonious boot from my squad. I feel bad about it sometimes, but I'm not going to have someone I cannot use effectively in my squad. Mumble is indispensable, and I don't know how anyone survives without it.
PR Mumble and mics promote effective teamplay and communication. Spend the couple bucks, and watch your swearing when your parents are home. To be honest, you probably won't be talking all that much, SL's and ASL's do most of the talking, all you need to do is communicate contact reports and say "yes or no"
EDIT: Further reading about mumble!
Would you rather have to type out a long winded warning to the APC, just to have him get blown up by the RPG you were trying to notify him of, or do you want to tell your SL on squad net "Contact RPG! 345, 2nd floor, 1st window on the right!" then your squad lead notifies the APC via mumble squad leader radio "APC this is squad 4, you have an RPG tracking you at C5k2, building, 2nd floor, 1st window on the right" "Roger 4, thanks for the warning, I see him we're engaging"
Without mumble none of that is possible.
