Later this month Project Reality will be releasing a map pack for version 0.973 of its highly acclaimed modification to Battlefield 2. The map pack will be chock full of maps, with 4 brand new locations and 3 old favorites that have been given fresh, new updates. This highlight introduces one of the new maps as we wait for the upcoming release in mid-December.

Hello VapoMan. Thanks to this map pack, we are going to play on maps created by some new mappers full of potential... and you are one of them. What do you think of mapping? Give us your feeling?

I really enjoy mapping. For me it's fun, relaxing and mentally stimulating. At times I would rather work on a map than play a game because in the end I feel more rewarded knowing I've actually done something constructive. It lets me create an environment that what I think myself and others would like to play in.

I regularly look and listen to the feedback that people give about the current maps, so I've got a good idea of what most people like and don't like. I think that it's important to have this connection with the community to be able to make something that everyone will enjoy.

Can you give us some information regarding your map, such as factions, vehicles and so on?

Those that tested the map earlier this year will remember that it originally featured the MEC. In comparison, the MEC was underpowered against the PLA so I decided to switch out MEC for Russia. Not only is it more balanced, but we get to use the much under-used Russian and PLA desert camouflage uniforms.

In regards to the asset layout, I've gone for a symmetrical layout, similar to Kashan desert, but with less focus on tanks. I want it to be more of a fight for infantry with the vehicles there to assist them; i.e. a proper combined arms experience.

A basic story for the map is that, due to a fuel crisis, countries around the world have been invading or investing in oil-rich countries and this has evolved into war. A war that involves China and Russia fighting desperately against each other to gain power over the oil fields.

I'm sure it will be a jolly good map. Can you tell us how long you have been working on it?

I have been working on Black Gold for almost a year. I started back in December 2010. At the time it was a side project, intended to be just a simple training map. I couldn't help myself though and I kept adding more and more detail. I soon saw its potential as an actual PR map and it became my main project.

Will the BMP-2 finally be introduced for this map? Been waiting for that beautiful vehicle for a long time...

Already was a highlight, a year ago. Just curious why it wouldn't be used on a Russian desert map. No desert skin for it?

no, because we can do it on Kokan because USMC, USA and CAN all share the same language files

if we put USA on Black Gold 32 it would have Russian voices

The BMPs should be included in the next major release. They won't be in this map pack. After all, it's a map pack. :)

What? The PF-98 is awesome. It ALWAYS shoots straight for me, on the INF layout during the beta I was sniping emplacements 1000m away with it with no problem.

seems a lot has changed since last time we saw it in the community modding section, I like the new lighting (though less dramatic it's more in line with pr's mapstyle), but frankly I think it's a shame the Russians have replaced the MEC. As much as I like the russian comfac, I always found the MEC vs PLA setting very interesting.

im still wondering why you dont use different textures in front of the houses here:

some small ways etc. now it looks like a dead place, bring live into it.
you can also do alot with the terrainsun/staticsun & shadow settings.

Its an abandoned farm, hence why the buildings are dilapidated and the area is run down. ;)
