Reflexsight

Post by Tahanatos »

Hello everybody,
I come to you with something that has been bugging me in basically every shooter I ever played. (Apart from the original Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six maybe).

Im on about the Reddot/Reflex sight. The beauty of this device IRL is that to use it, unlike any other scope or such, with both eyes open. Therefore you have most of your field of view plus you know where you are shooting.

In videogames however its always portrayed as if someone is filming with a camera situated a meter behind the sight or as if the person aiming is closing his left eye to aim, therefore you still know where you are shooting, but you sacrifice a big part of your field of view. With is ok with a small weaponsmodel. For example the M4, but completely ruins the point of the device on the G36.

To underline this i have prepared a little do it yourself experiment:

1. Take your right hand and hold it 10cm in front of your right eye. Palm to the front.
2. You will notice that you can see your hand, but still got most of your field of view (Reddot IRL)
3. Close your left eye and notice the difference.

The solution: Potray the weapon with ca.30% visibility, blurry, and smaller as soon as someone "zoomes in" the Reddot.
I dont know if this is at all possible, but thank you for reading and a happy 2012

the sight has to be in the centre of the screen w/e in BF2 in order for it to shoot on target.

Can't say I've used a reflex sight in r/l, had a little play with one quite a few years ago but can't remember much but I think it is probably habit to close one eye when looking down it myself so you can focus on the target?

Well the sight can be in the center, but is it possible to make the zoomed in weaponsmodel transparent. At least to a degree?

Its possible yes but its not going to happen because 1, it would most likely require another texture sheet for each weapon using it, taking up loads more mbs which we can't spare and 2, would look ridiculous :p

1. I do understand very well, espacially the workload involved.
2. It might just look quite good if you get the visibillityof the weapon just right, but thats even more workload, but I never thought that you would choose looks over realism ;-p

A transparent weapon isn't exactly realistic, its not like my hand in front of my face suddenly becomes semi transpranet when I have both eyes open :p

And like I said, I would have though most people would shut one eye when looking though a reflex sight so they can focus on the target more easily.

From what I have read about Reflex sights, been taught in training and personally experienced closing one eye is simply wrong since it doesnt only limit your field of view, but can also lead to other aiming mistakes.

But getting back to the topic: If you think about the little experiment with the hand earlier (original post) having both eyes open while one hand is partly blocking the field of view of one eye creates the illusion of the hand beeing semi transparent. Focusing your view on the target and not on your hand that is. Or how else would you describe the optical effect?

think of it this way ... playing a video game you already have the sense of having one eye shut the whole entire time. game cameras Point of view are used off one specific point in space only with a 3D system could this idea fully be implemented having two different perspective points at the same time. I honestly like your idea but now think of a way how to use the idea in a logical way in a video game. its going to be a bit harder not saying it cant be done but until that answer is met it may not be seen so soon :S

Yeah the point of red dot is that you can aim faster and with bigger field of view. In PR red dot just limits your fiew.

Oh btw you can also use ironsights with both eyes open, just needs some practice.

there is some true about this sugestion, but IRL u r looking with both eyes when u are shooting at close target, while moving, for better avare of surrounding, for long target even with RedDot u aim with one eyes, couse if u look on target 300+ with both eyes path of view of seperate eye is crossed the same as the persons who need to wear optics, so efect will be that u are shooting off the target left or right. In other words, with closed eye u make some kind tunnel of vision. But i think this is too much for BF2 engine at the moment, as it was described few post before. Maybe, they will do this in PR2 :D
