A ghost from the past...
I used to be lead sound engineer for a competitor of Black Sand Studio's first product: Infiltration for Unreal Tournament. Back then Infiltration was by far the most polished and most professional looking mod for UT, and was unfairly robbed of a commercial release IMO. The sound effects for Infiltration were also the best in any game EVER at the time. As a sound engineer myself, it was my job to know what sound effects were out there for all the commercial and non-commercial competitors.
Fast forward and my favourite FPS right now is BF2. Why? Because I like playing with bots. Time's passed and I have kids now so I don't have time to play hours a day to be good enough to last very long on the BF3 servers. I don't play to get my butt kicked every time, on the contrary if I play, which probably average at most 5 minutes a week, it will be for a little escapism where I can feel that I am somewhat competent in a field where I don't have formal training. That's why I like BF2 - because it has bots whose abilities can scale with mine.
The problem is that BF2 sound effects aren't that great. They're okay, but there's no long distance sound effects. Did you know that the Infiltration mod was also one of the very first games EVER to have long distance sound effects? So I did a google search for a BF2 mod that had long distance sound effects and came up with "Project Reality". Then I came onto this website and found that Black Sand Studios was involved. Surprise surprise! Actually it's a very pleasant surprise, because the work that was done on Infiltration cannot be lost.
I am now in the process of downloading it. I hope it is not too "realistic", and I hope it still has bots.

Welcome "back"! and welcome to the forums too!
Project Reality is one of the most realistic experience you can find but it's really "noob" firendly, you can learn the mod really quickly and use the same controls as BF2, there's bots too, like BF2.
But what happened to 'Infiltration'? Do you mean that a commercial GAME with the same aspects went out and kindda destroyed the player base, etc, of the 'Infiltration' mod? Also what is that game?

As an (ex?) sound engineer, this thread should be a good fun introduction to the PR forums
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f388-p ... -test.html
edit:
and this one is rather related to what you used to do with the distance sounds:

Re: A ghost from the past...
just google infiltration for unreal tournament. There's some youtube videos too. The commercial game was a rip off of Counter Strike, so it was UT's way of cashing in on the trend (by commercializing the mod). Infiltration on the other hand was ahead of its time, and didn't have the same wide fan base as the mod that eventually became a commercial game. I *think* what happened to Inf is shortly after, a commercial game called "Operation Flashpoint" came out which used almost all of the design elements of Infiltration that made it unique (eg. dynamic "moving reticule"), but with a flashier engine (than UT) that did day-time light changes for example. OpFP sort of made Infiltration redundant and Inf faded away I think.Pvt.LHeureux wrote: But what happened to 'Infiltration'? I am only speculating based on the timing of events. By that time I was already an "ex" sound engineer and was no longer in mod development, so I don't know what really happened.
BSS' product doesn't really belong on the UT engine anyway. It should probably rightfully belong on the Frostbite 2 engine - that's it's ultimate foundation IMO (even though there's no bots in BF3
Some people just don't understand how important bots are to some gamers. Bots allow a true sandbox environment. When you have other humans playing in that sandbox - you often get your sandcastle kicked down over and over again.

Re: A ghost from the past...
Welcome Indeed
... i should suggest you get in touch with our Project reality Crack Sound team they have been doing some extremely amazing things lately with this mod. Im sure the Devs will read your introduction eventually and i sure hope they send some sort of invitation for development because of your experience
we can never have too many hands on deck with this project.. no pun intended.
but YES Project reality DOES have our share of Bots on the CO-OP servers that are a 100% perfect blend for beginers entering directly from Vanilla BF2 into the "Real world" of project reality multiplayer. but honestly even if you havnt played yet you should seriously Jump into Project reality FACE FIRST join a semi populated server for starters to get the basics down im sure you can find a squad leader or squad mate to help you out.
that really is one of the things that makes PR so special is the Help from the community members for new combers. we all were new at some point some earlier or later than others but all in all we all learned one way or another and thats by just playing and getting used to it.
once again Welcome ^_^
and i hope you read and understand what im trying to say.

I've only ever played Infiltration with bots, and I really wish I had caught it when it was in its heyday.
Still, it truly was way ahead of it's time. With that recoil system, the collision model for weapons and that game mode that would generate objectives randomly, Infiltration is still way above most shooters out there today. You even had a kickass main menu theme!

It's way more realistic than PR D: silly engine

Re: A ghost from the past...
As you can hear from the demo video, the guns sounds amazing (check at 6:10s). The only problem was all the other sounds were too loud. My advice would be to turn down the volume for all other sounds (or have the option) so that gun sounds and explosions were far louder by comparison.

Hi Omega,
How true, INF was far ahead of the curve.
There were 5 or 6 of us that would play regularly online, we even bought the first non-commercial release that took like 11 months to come out
You are right, we moved on to Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon, Red Orchestra - always comparing to INF and now play the PR mod, since 2006. I think I played about 4 hours of BF2 before searching for a realism mod
MikeMuck and I are the only 2 left from the group who regularly play PR, usually on weekends.
You're welcome to join up with us anytime.
Cheers,
Guardian_[]Bob

Kind of reminds me of the Insurgency mod for HL2.

Sadly its true the BF2 Engine wasnt designed for that sort of usage ... it was made for a Dull minded Arena style shooting game. unlike ARMA which does that that sort of capability to drop objects and crate your own kit BF2 has it all preset for us -_- .... blame it on the Developers and companies out to make a profit.

lol looking at all the features in the video, even COD stole lots of ideas from it. for example holding your breath.
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.

That looks (and sounds) amazing even for today standards, how low the game industry is becoming.

It all comes down to what kind of tools the modders get. With powerful enough development kits, I'm sure we could have seen some pretty amazing stuff in BF2.

Also, as unrealistic as vBF2 is, I wouldn't call it an "Arena-style" game. Maybe on infantry-only Karkand...*shudders*

Man that feature with ammo types at 7:20 is way too awesome (especially how the previous round flies out when you chamber a new one)

Re: A ghost from the past...
Hey INF Omega,
Welcome to PR -- The closest experience you will find to INF these days!
It's probably been 8-9 years since I regularily played INF, but it is still the game I compare all others to. Although the graphics are dated when compared to today's standards, I have never found another game that included so many "realistic" FPS features in one game.
Some of the features that I still miss:
- the weapons modelling
- the customizable weapon kit load-outs
- the stamina modelling
- the free aim system
- leaning around a corner
- the movement and collision modelling
- buildings with doors and windows that you could open and then close
- night maps with flashlights and night vision goggles
- 1 life, 1 death
Don't get me wrong, I love PR and it has been my primary FPS since the summer of 2006. But I miss my silenced P90, being able to cook off a few seconds on a grenade before I toss it, or holding my breath while I swim underwater to a location behind the enemy.
If any of the R-DEVs are reading this (maybe some ideas for PR, PR2 or PR ARMA) or anyone else interested in some the finer details of INF, Dslyecxi wrote 2 articles way back in 2006:
1. Tactical Gaming Done Right , according to Dslyecxi
2. The Best of Tactical Gaming: Infiltration
In the first article Dslyecxi discusses the tactical and realistic features in FPS, and how the various games have implemented these aspects, along with his take on what is the best approach.
The second article is solely focused on INF and how it implemented these same features.
Anyway... Omega... Welcome to PR
Hope to see you online sometime in the future.
