View Distance Problem

Post by mikecloete »

Hi Guys,

I have noticed lately a problem that seems to affect me personally regarding view distance in the game. View Distance as well as most other settings are set to their highest level.

Often a friendly will call over mumble a target which I for some reason cannot see, it is beyond my view distance yet for the rest of the squad, they can see the target. This is especially annoying when I join armour squads and has forced me to be the designated driver always (Most tank engagements for example happen well beyond my line of site (view) with the gunner having to shout stop as I cannot see the target. :confused :) I have driven quite a lot these past few weeks and have determined that most gunners can see 50 - 75m further than me.

All other aspects of my game run smoothly. Have any of you guys encountered this problem before? and if yes, do you have any help with solutions to fix the problem?

Thanks a lot

Mike :)

From my own experienced I realized that your view distance is kinda like a square instead of half of a circle.
So imagine your the blue rectangle is the tank and you are the blue dot.

So if you focus a point with the left or right edge of your screen this allows you to actually see further.

Math: the square's edge length is e.g 2km and the orange bar is your line of sight.
In the left picture its also 2km while in the right picture its sqrt(2^2+1^2) which equals sqrt(5)km.
Got it?
Always use the edges of your screen to see further, can make an ingame screenshot if its not understandable.

Interesting...so if red square is map, and blue square is tank, and blue dot is me, I should position myself, or tank, so it gets pointed to edge of the map, and then my view distance is more than double?

If this is true, bf2 game mechanics are screwed completely. Sorry if I'm wrong, I never liked math and trigonometry :p

Nah thats not the point.
See the red square as the visible area, it has nothing to do with the map itself, will make a screenshot to show you.

EDIT: Here you go:

Take a look at the red square. On pic1 you can see nothing while on pic2 there is a tower.
I didnt moved, just view it from a different angle.

Thanks for the Reply guys :D .

I have noticed this weird feature of the BF2 engine as well. I can see farther when I use the side of my screen.

My problem occurs when the gunner and I both look directly towards an enemy, he can see the enemy while the enemy is just beyond my range of view. If I turn my driver's turret I can most times see the enemy but this is more or less useless when I try gunning and need to aim dead on at a target.

However, I am starting to think my problem might just be hardware related as my machine is most likely pushing it to the limit. Annoying, but not the end of the world. I quite enjoy driving through the deserts and forests of Project Reality  .

Many Thanks

Mike
