[Solved] Game freezes after about 20-60 seconds in multiplayer.

Post by Hulta »

Hello. As stated in the Title my game and whole computer freezes after about ~1 min into a multiplayer game and I often get some strange electronic loop sound.
The only way to get rid of this is a hard reset.
However I can create a local server and play without this freeze occurring.

I know it's not a overheating problem and all my drivers are up to date.

I've tried:
Reinstalling the game(both bf2 and PR).
Running software like ccleaner.
Changing soundcard.
Playing without mumble.
reinstalling DirectX
Lowering settings ingame.

My specs are:
Win7 ultimate 64bit
Intel core i7-2600k
Radeon 6990
16gb ram

Is your CPU overclocked?

Weird as it sounds, going in to BIOS and turning off Turbo Boost will fix this problem sometimes.

You are the second person to report this problem with the i7-2600k in the last week.
Here is the troubleshooting conversation we've been trying with the other guy, you should read through this...
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... erver.html

Let's start with this:
Full reinstall of BF2 steam version and a clean reinstall of PR?
Did you apply the retail .exe patch?
Did you do a MD5 checksum on your PR installation files?
What keyboard do you use?
What soundcard do you use?
Do you have PRMumble 1.0 installed on your PC?

The user account you use to play PR is admin rights or something less?

What ATI drivers version are you using?

Did you start Vanilla BF2 one time login and join a Multiplayer game?

Did you clear out the shaders folder after your fresh reinstall?

GO to the BF2.exe file, Try BF2 as XP SP3 compatibility, disable desktop composition, disable visual themes.

Try running PR.exe as Try BF2 as XP SP3 compatibility, disable desktop composition, disable visual themes.

Then start PR.
You should note the time your PC freezes, reboot, login and go to Event Viewer ,
in Win 7, Start->type in Event Viewer, will be first result.

Look for system errors, freezes, and anything related to BF2 and PRMumble,

copy the error report logs entries to Notepad, then paste that in a response here.
C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr or where ever you have it installed,
find the file prError.log
open it in notepad.
SCroll down to the bottom, find your recent error reports, copy that and paste that in a reply here.

I took away the OC on my CPU and disabled turbo boost and I were able to enter a server and play without any problems. But after joining other servers the problem reoccurred. Sometimes it I can play, sometimes not.

Also this is from my prError log:

These two occur often.

This looks very similar: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... ocess.html

So did you try clearing the shader cache?

Hmm. Z68 here, as well (ASUS P8Z68-V Pro Gen 3). Don't know if it's relevant.

Grey do you also have a prError.log file in your /mod/pr folder?

I'm thinking it might be a disk security issue...
right click on your drive that has BF2 and PRMumble installed, select Properties.
Select the Security tab.
Select your user account that you play with, it should have administrator privileges.

There is a Permissions for Administrators section,
make sure your administrator has ALLOW for full rights to the drive, and all oother options except special permissions.

A started searching google using the info from Hulta's error log, it seems this has been a problem with PR for quite some time:

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... eploy.html
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... ime-2.html

Which gives us a possible solution... :) We can bypass PR from trying to open the video.con file by adding the info in the command line as such:

As far as editing your shortcut for wide-screen
It should look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +widescreen 1 +szx 1600 +szy 1200 +restart

Adjust it for your screen resolution.
thepalerider wrote:Some other things you can try to fix CTD before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder.
Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Starting PR from your PR shortcut
(a new default folder is created)
Link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

As far as editing your shortcut for wide-screen
It should look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +widescreen 1 +szx 1600 +szy 1200 +restart

adjust for the desired resolution

Your shortcut can do more. I use:
start +widescreen 1 +szx 1600 +szy 1200 +restart +playerName xxxx +playerPassword xxxx

Replace XXXX with your user name and password

Adding this string bypasses the startup video, logs you in and takes you directly to the server browser.

Good luck
Welcome to PR

Then I found this:

XennoX wrote:I managed to get it sorted out, eventually. Turns out my AV didn't like the fact that Part 3 of the install has the option to update PB and its services. It picked it up as a worm or trojan, so it quarantined the file. When I told it to restore the file, it had damaged some of the files.

Uninstalling PR and then using a fresh copy of Part 3 with my AV off sorted out the problems.

XennoX wrote:Kaspersky IS 2011. Picks up a lot of false positives that one. Even tells me PR mumble is a keylogger.

SO Grey and Hulta, what AntiVirus and anti-malware programs are you running?

I'm using Avast free and PR is excluded.
I've been tinkering a little and concluded that turbo boost doesn't seem to create this problem since I were able to join a server and play with it on.

The game works in about 4 out of 10 times for me now (This is after a computer restart without doing any major changes) it's really hard to get a hold of what I did that might got it to work... Starting to feel like a lottery when I'm joining new servers :p

Also keep in mind that this only happens when I join a internet server. Local server is fine.

I'm not going to say it's Crossfire...

...but it's Crossfire.

As with Hulta, the problem has always been intermittent for me, though more like 1 out of 100 when joining a Mumble server. I never had trouble (even with Crossfire enabled) joining "regular" servers until the other day.

I just disabled Crossfire and joined the TG public server (a Mumble server) with no problem. Disabling/enabling Crossfire is very simple to do (two clicks in CCC) and does not require a reboot, so I'm happy to take this extra step if it means the difference between playing PR or not. I'm not sure how the 6990 works, but I imagine you can do the same?

I'll continue to test this and report back if anything changes. Here's hoping the long, dark nightmare is over.

Well I tried to disable crossfire earlier today and the game still froze for me.

I used radeon pro for disabling it. Will try doing it with CCC.

Some Googling leads me to understand that you can not actually disable one of the GPUs in a dual-GPU card like the 6990. I have seen mention, however, that running your application in windowed mode will force single-GPU. All of this information comes from almost a year ago, of course, so with newer drivers, etc, who knows...

God almighty I've spent a lot of time on this.
OK, the same problem occurs in BF2, BF2142, BFBC2, and BF3.

Here is a 79 page thread regarding crashes of this sort in BFBC2.

In short, go to your BIOS and disable onboard Realtek Azalia audio, save settings, and start windows and either vBF2 or PR and test it.

This means you have to buy a frigging sound card though, or a USB headset etc.

Before I could only disable it with a software called radeon pro but with the latest driver I seem to be able to do it with the ccc.

Actually I have a usb sound card adapter thingy and I tried to disable the realtek ones at the sound options in windows and use the adapter. Yet I still got the freeze.

but I never disabled them in bios so I will try that.

Edit: I disabled them in bios and I still got the freeze.

From what I have read, though, that doesn't actually disable the second GPU. Do you have an old single GPU card around that you could try? And have you tried windowed mode?

I'm kind of stuck on the Crossfire thing, as our situations are so similar and it worked for me...
