New here

Post by spartacon5267 »

Hey Everyone,

Just thought I'd post a quick introduction :)

I've been into gaming for awhile now and I found out about PR through youtube and the Battlefield: Play4Free forum. I've been a Battlefielder for awhile now and although I'm normally the console lone-wolf type, teamwork does bring a new element of fun into the game. I am new here, so if you would tell me what the latest version of the PR mod is and how to find PR servers I'd appreciate it.

I also play CoD and Battlefield on Xbox if anyone else here plays on the 360.

Looking forward to playing with everyone.

Welcome to the forums, and Project Reality.

I think you will find PR definitely a step up in terms of gameplay, and difficulty from Call of Duty and Battlefield (also in terms of class, seriously PR is such a better game than both combined).

I would recommend you to read the manual as Monkey said, the downloads can be found on the link he posted and I would also recommend you to download the Map Pack, also available on that page. The new maps add an even thicker layer of excellence to the game (not mod! :P ).

Download the Installer, install (obviously...) and install Mumble too (dont know if the most recent version is included in the installer, somebody else might be able to help you on that front). Mumble is a positional voice program which the best PR servers use to increase the teamwork (and replace the BF2 voice-comms).

Follow the main menu into the online section (NOT local play) and join a server. I most recommend NwA UK Reality (insurgency I recommend, but only cos i love insurgency), Tactical Gamer and ive heard good things of SISU, dont know much about the server though (apart from the fact it holds the test phases of 100+ player servers).

When you get ingame, join an infantry squad and tell your SL that you are new to the game. Most good Squad Leaders (and squad members) will help you out, teach you the way of the game (sometimes, some are so focused on winning they forget that its a game, and some are just ******** who dont help new players). Tell your SL you would like to stick with the normal Rifleman kit for a bit to get used to the game before trying your hand at Medic, Machine Gunner, AT/AA etc. At least for your first round anyway.

Most importantly, settle in well and have fun, im sure you will love PR, its like standing on a coastline breathing fresh air in comparison to Call of Duty/Battlefield/Insert generic shooter here.

Oh, and dont take the sniper kit...

1) Install BF2
2) Install BF2 Patches (1.41 & 1.5)
2) Install Project Reality mod (find it on this site, home page on the right bar will lead you there)
3) Install Project Reality Mappack (same location as mod download)
4) Install Mumble (special communications application, read up on how to use PR:Mumble)
5) Restart Computer

To Run PR:
1) Run Mumble as 'Administrator'
2) Run PR as (Administrator) [PR = Project Reality]
3) Log into BattleField network (I think you can use a normal BF2 account, if not make a new one)
4) Set Graphics Card Settings
5) Click on 'Deployment' (from the main menu)
6) Refresh Server List
7) Join a server. If a server is 'red' it means you don't have the right map installed. If a lot of servers are red, probably means you don't have the mappack installed.

Welcome! I recommend any PRTA server, and to avoid the PRTA SISU (128-player) server until you get the basics down. The PRTA SISU server is fast paced and hectic, not a good environment to someone still on the learning curve.

Battlefield play 4 free had great potential...but it's pretty crappy now. BF2 is my favorite battlefield anyway.

You might have forgotten a step. If someone has just installed BF2 & PR at the same time from scratch, they won't have a profiles folder in their documents which I believe will cause PR to crash. This means you have to start up BF2 once, login with an account (so do step 2 & 3 but in BF2) and then you can run PR without dramas.

This may have changed, as it's been a long time since I tested it myself. Around 0.85 it was still the case.

Welcome aboard Sparacon. Glad to hear you're interested in teamwork, this is certainly the place for it. Compared to what I used to experience in BF2, Project Reality is so far ahead of that I can't even play vanilla anymore. :P

Welcome to the forums and community!

To add to what Welsh already said; you'll discover that PR will offer an unique gameplay experience while also posing new and unusual challenges, compared to the games you are used to. If you struggle with anything, you're invited to ask us here or your fellow players in-game for advice, as long as (like the others have said) you give the manual a proper read first :)

Seeing how you're a Battlefield veteran, the basic controls and such won't pose much of a challenge for you, but you should still refrain from hopping into jets, helicopters or armoured vehicles (at least as pilot/driver/gunner) until you've been around for a while; while the vehicles aren't much harder to use than their BF equivalents, their value is immense and the expectations towards a vehicle crew are high; failing to properly perform close air support will make the server populance angry, losing a jet will render your team unable to regain air superiority for at least 20 minutes.

So it is indeed best to stick with regular infantry (stay away from the sniper kit, too) at first until you know what you, as an infantryman, expect from the heavy assets - then it's time to learn how to use them (best to find an experienced crewman to help you out) and give them a go, if you so desire. It's easier to understand what makes a good APC driver if you've been a passenger for some time. :)

Most importantly, communicate, and to do that most effectively, get and set up Mumble. You don't seem like the shy type, so I guess you won't have a problem with PR if you can get over the first few annoying deaths that didn't make sense to you ^^

Again, welcome to the community, be invited to share your PR experience with us at the forums :)
