Project reality guide website?

Post by Ziriix »

So i have been thinking somewhat on making a website that allows players to make guides about PR. I actually have a working prototype that i put together for the lulz but before i start putting down allot of time in it i want to know if there is any interest from the community itself to use something like this.

Some more explanation about my thoughts
Project reality is a really teamwork oriented game that takes allot of time to get used to. Learning all the things in PR right now is probably done by passing on information from player to player in games or on this forum. But is this really the best way for a new player to understand the more deep things about PR? Ofc i'm not talking about how to aim and press the trigger but all those other things one needs to know.

Sure there is some guides in commanding, squad leading plus other things but would it not be easier to have all of these things in the same place? Wouldn't it also be nice to give the players reading guides a chance rate it depending if its good or bad and place comments.

The website itself will be really simple without allot of stupid annoying things and just show you what you want without complex menus and links before you find the guide you are looking for.

So what do you think? If you have any ideas on how to improve this even more please give me a hint. Also if you want to help with testing or development send me a PM :)

The things i need most help with is layout/design and some guy to make pictures in photoshop

Yes all the info is here somewhere, but not many people CBA to go delving.
If info was better presented and easier to read than threads would more people read it - yes

My 2 cents.

Add a subpage for the main site, and build a wiki-type guide, instead of in the forums.

You're welcome to make one, although there is PR wiki which is not available atm, and is under construction.

Like PLODDITHANLEY said many ppl CBA diving into the forum to find what they want. Therefor the main goal would be a fast and easy way do display what you are looking for with just a few clicks.

I'm aware of that there is a (PR guide / Wiki) in development but that has been down for as long as i have been playing the game and that is along time so i was thinking why not try and make one myself :P

It's not supposed to be a wiki because i don't think that would be the best approach to spread knowledge about tactics and teamwork. Reason for that being a wiki only allow one of each type of (Guide / info page) that anyone can change? All players in PR have there own little way of doing things and this allow them to share this instead of just showing one page that is "Correct" according to the last guy to edit it.

Correct me if i'm wrong i'm not so read up on wiki's.

Maybe if you used a forum/wiki hybrid:

A topic for a tactic or tip (or whatever) and then people can add to it, like a comment, that could be added, or discussed on how to improve it. But, not like a reply(like a forum) but a comment (dare i say, like Facebook)

This wiki cannot be edited by anyone. Only authorized personnel can do it, and its nothing like wikipedia, or mediawiki...much customized version of those....patience :-P

I'm reasonably sure it's been considerably longer than 2 years... feels like forever tbh. I'm glad the button on the top link reel was finally removed a couple of years back.

I feel like I'm a pretty patient guy, but the thought of it having been worked on so long seems pretty funny. Also, you're right, it's nothing like wikipedia because I can go to wikipedia right now and look up some useful information. ;)

That wiki was still WIP back when PRSP was a mini mod (0.8 era). It's real sad that players have no way to find out info about assets. Some people still don't know that the BTR-60, but not the BTR-80, can be hurt by 12.7mm fire. Or that any type of small arms fire can take down a BRDM-2 or MT-LB with time. Of course that to say nothing about not even knowing the assets name.

Yes, it'll be very useful once it is ready, much more detailed than the manual, though I understand why it's a low priority, I'd rather be playing with new assets and maps than reading a wiki. (Though really, how much effort is required to make one (genuine question, I have no idea, it's all voodoo to me)?, if all the CONs and DEVs were able to edit it, it'd get pretty big pretty fast I'm sure).

Like MaSSive said the wiki current being developed is not for anyone to edit but if you ask me that really limits the amount of knowledge one can gain from it.

In my eye's the best way to teach players more about the game is to use the players themselves as the source of knowledge. This way the DEV/CON's don't have to sit and type down information for ages before its done and when new stuff gets out update all the old stuff.

Keep in mind that my goal with all of this is not to make a new manual about how the game works and more like a database of knowledge about all the important things that aren't covered in the manual.

In my eyes this can be done in three ways as follows:
1: A forum subsection like it is now. (Allot of ppl cant be arsed digging on forum.)
2: A wiki site. (Only one infopage per lets say vehicle that anyone can edit.)
3: A hybrid of both. (Anyone can make a new infopage that the person can update and change as he wants but at the same time giving ppl the ability to comment and rate.)

To make a website that can hold this type of content doesn't take long however if your supposed to write all the information yourself "Like the DEV's are doing right now" it will take extremely long time and that is why i suggest you leave it to the users.

Clearly that's the problem

Anyway any medium to allow players to improve and for new players to learn can only be win for PR and us the community.

I support Ziriix's WIP project, guides made by players them self for players is a hell of a way to promote PR and the goals of any community out there (NEW / NwA / PRTA etc) - to have experienced and smart players on the servers that fully understand meaning and role of any aspect of the game. As this type of project gives the ability to a player to create a guide according to the players experience and knowledge, pass it on and be used by someone else. No matter what you like in-game (air assets, armor, spec-ops or just simple plain inf) you'll get all information and knowledge of this database, allowing players to open their eyes to something bigger and new.

I can rephrase if anyone wishes, I'm kind of tired and sleepy right now but I hope you guys get my point...

I would love to make guides to promote PR and help other players to see what world of PR there is and what you can do out there. Plus it's suiting for my ego, to let people see what I am capable of in PR
