AIM 120 Missiles
Hi all, A quick question. how do the AIM 120 missiles work. AIM 9's I can work but with the AIM 120's I can't seem to get a lock on anything.

Re: AIM 120 Missiles
There should be very low pitch sound I never figured out what it says, but sound like 'fire, fire' or something like that. Takes more time to lock but once they lock they track targets on much longer distance than aim9.
In short, longer range.

AIM-9/AA-11/PL-9:
Short lock range (800 m), quick lock (.5 sec), wide lock cone (45 degrees, but you'll still want target within 20 degrees of nose for the missile to track on launch). Best used in pursuit engagements against enemy jets if you're in a fighter jet.
AIM-120/AA-12:
Longer lock range (1200 m), slower lock (about 1 sec), smaller lock cone (I think 15 degrees), softer lock TONE. Best used against helicopters or for head-to-head engagements; as the longer lock range allows a successful launch on the stationary/closing target before you overshoot them.
Missiles have identical flight performance, lethality, and response to flares.

watch for the diamond.
AMRAAM isn't as good as the sidewinder in PR anyways, for most situations.

The posts below me are dumb end thread.
Noddy: I know there were a number of posts in this thread I could have directed a warning at....but meh.. when people paint a target on themselves it's hard to miss
Warning only.. back on topic... Thanks for understanding.

AIM120 has longer locking range.
Radar can contact enemy 1300m away, but lock it in closer range.
BTW, why lots of guy's country is vietnam?
