Or maybe people who can't play PR while running Mumble should consider getting a computer that's not from 1995.

See that? I should have 4Mb/s / 0.512Mb/s but its not the case with most of ISP's. This is my home internet connection which I use most of the time when playing. Even with half a megabit upload I have to lower sound quality or I might get micro stuttering and voice cutoffs.

My PC is not from 1995 for sure, but this above is the limit for a lot of people. Even those with high upload speeds have problems sometimes, cause mumble server simply gets overloaded and have difficulties answering all requests.

This is what I was talking about. And you can run PR+Mumble on single core PC with higher clock rates, and 3+ Gb of ram with some decent GPU with 512Mb of ram.

Now if I could run it on this one which is my server

Mumble doesn't make a player better. It would be easy for a terrible player to install mumble, but they're still going to suck.

Sorry, I'm gonna go with the "use mumble" camp. It's easier than ever before - while you can have good teamwork without it, you can have better teamwork with it. In order for it to be perfect, you need everyone to make the (small) effort necessary. Think of it as your own little contribution to the PR community.

I know this conversation's essentially over by now, but I just wanted to add that BF2 has significant latency in-game. If a grenade is thrown into your room, and you say, "Grenade!" over VOIP, by the time your transmission reaches the other person, you'd all be dead anyways.

Just to be clear. This thread is not FOR or AGAINST Mumble. Its rather should it be mandatory or not. SO in that light I expressed my opinion. Technically making some software that is still beta mandatory is no way to go with.

However I fully support it, and think its essential for teamwork, but I revealed its flaws, and my personal opinion why not making it mandatory.

Most of people use private TS3 servers when they play, or ventrilo, etc...I cant remember tbh last time I used bf2 voip. Afaic it can be disabled, but its not good for new players. Not all are "Mumble aware" and will have hard time adapting to game. Probably will make them either ragequit and uninstall, or do lonewolfing vanilla style. Things that are simple shouldn't be made complicated, just because majority thinks its cool and better, and spend most of time depring over it, than anything else.

Tartan, programs that run seperately from the main game and improve a player without any extra effort from them are not communications tools. They're hacks. Mumble cannot inherently increase the skill of a player. It just makes idiots louder and much harder to ignore.

I don't like mumble because it forces me to listen to the incessant **** other people feel like transmitting. It's been my experiance that it's about 75% worthless, 10% communications checks, and 15% tactically useful data.

That's quite the pile of bullshit you've presented there Mat. The presence of idiots on a server is dependent on admins. Good admins and servers don't allow useless **** spammed over mumble, so you're just talking out of your ***. The mumble servers have much better teamwork and improved gameplay, servers without it do not. Any objection you might want to make up is irrelevant in the face of reality.

It's not a function of poor admining like it was in the beginning, people don't generally play music anymore, and spammers are dealt with.

And Arc, what makes you say that? Mumble's primary function is to allow 3D audio between nearby players. This audio, in my experience, degrades in useful function in a linear curve with every new player who enters range. The ability of squad leaders to share interesting tidbits of information like "There's.. uh.. a tank in.. uh.. E6 keypad.. Four? No, Five. E5 Keypad four. Keypad 6, excuse me..." Is nice, I guess. Brevity is a lost art.

For the record, there has been a selective mute/deafen function even before mumble 1.0. Not saying that comm discipline isn't something to be worked on, just that there are ways around those who don't have it.

Yes. Guess what, some times people are just plain wrong, and this is one of those times for you.

If you've used mumble much and played on servers that are properly admined then we would statistically have been exposed to the same amounts of spam. So the only way you've had such a horrible experience is because you were not able to set it up properly before the latest version, you were playing on **** servers and expecting something non-crappy, or you went out of your way to have the worst possible experience using it.

You probably just came into mumble with a chip on your shoulder, intent to loathe it, managed to get yourself into just enough bad experiences to throw in the towel, and have just been sitting around hating on it ever since.

I haven't run a single non-Mumble infantry squad since the release of 1.0. Like I said previously, 1.0 is the best thing to happen to PR since AAS.

So true. I'm glad that so many people are using Mumble, but puzzles me how some people don't want to use it. As soon as someone joins my squad, I check to see if they're on Mumble. If not, I kick them after saying that I require it for communications and they should get it. Something I don't want to do, but I can't tolerate speaking over VOIP and Mumble, and there is no reason to.

There was a launcher made that will launch both at the same time. also downloading that one more megabyte isn't a problem I hope. As it comes with pr itself so you don't dl something separatly.

But, when someone don't have mumble, guys from another squad can't communicate with him while CQB or marching, that's awful!!
You know there is an AR, but you cant stop the whole squad walking into dead zone instantly.
Typing isn't working at once and even you tell your teammate on mumble to hold them will not effective neither. There will be casualties.

BTW, MUMBLE put the Game realistic, reason is obvious, you can talk~~

Tyco never said that, but he could've. If you can hear and subsequently reply to someone about something in game then that is an improvement in teamwork.

It's a fact, better players use mumble and those who use it become better unless you're a total dud.

I'd like to just say one last thing on this,

to the guys who are frequently SLs and require Mumble to stay in your squads,
I strongly suggest you politely tell the person why you are doing it, and type out this url to the person before kicking them:

this brings them directly to the download and support thread.

More often than not the non-mumble user is new to the PR mod, and it behooves the community as a whole to be friendly about kicking folks out of squads like that.

I really do need help with mumble.
I have it installed, configured and it "appears" operational in the game.
When I enter a game, my name is displayed in the right hand upper corner of the screen.
I see other players names come and go, sometimes there is a bell type sound as they go.
When I hold down my designated talk keys, my name on the screen lights up, indicating all is working however, I can hear no echo, nothing comes up on the screen to indicate anyone is hearing me and no-one answers me back. (sounds like the perfect wife)
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be wrong, incorrectly formatted, or why Mumble isn't working?
I am not the most tech savvy person on this site, so please be kind, gentle and understanding.

1. The overlay you see on screen with your name is customizable.
There are a list of 5 of the community submitted overlay config files in this post:

this link also is the FAQ for PRMumble.
In short.
1. start PRMumble as admin FIRST, connect to PRMumble server, then startBF2 R as admin.
2. Make sure you are not muted or deafened on the PRmumble server.
3. PRmumble does not by default have a local echo, you can use the Setup Wizard in PRmumble to test locally though.
4. From what you wrote, everything looks to be installed correctly. It's just the need to get the configuration correct.
5. In the link above, check the part about making sure your mic is set to the default device for PRmumble.
