Realism has plenty to do with it. Yes, helicopters are used to drop paratroops. But conventional forces (with the exception of long-range surveillance and pathfinder units, which are often the same thing) are generally only trained in static line parachuting with non-maneuverable or less-maneuverable canopies. Static-line parachuting, where the ripcord is pulled by a static-line (hence the name) in the aircraft when the paratrooper exits the aircraft (and not when the parachutist voluntarily pulls it), is not implemented in this engine. So we get to have everybody with a parachute in this lovely engine with the ability to free-fall/HALO insert with a high degree of maneuverability in the canopy.badmojo420 wrote:It was done to improve gameplay. Realism has nothing to do with it. Maybe in a game where the sky has realistic altitude limits, the fog isn't there, anti-aircraft weapons have their actual ranges, and we have enough people to defend the rear, maybe it'd create some awesome game play. But not in BF2R.
Also, parachute insertions aren't some half-assed, spur of the moment undertaking by low-echelon commanders in the middle of combat onto assault zones that are constantly shifting in control and being pelted by their own aircraft. Weather (not implemented in engine) and airspace control (definitely not implemented on public server) are also factors.
Original poster, I noticed you are on the opposite side of this issue in your thread in the ARMA2 suggestions section. Do you want pilots to be able to jump out of helicopters or not? Pick a side.
