[?] A good paint program to start making maps for PR?

Post by kerpus909090 »

I did not know where to post this so i put it in general discussion. But i want to start making some PR maps and i haven't so far been able to get around some issues with .raw files and making textures so i need a relatively low cost program. At least i think i do...

I think paintshop ultimate x4 by Corel is what i'm looking for but i was wondering if anyone else uses this program, and if it fits your needs for making maps..

thanks for the reply.

I think he's talking about height maps and stuff like that. Everything handled in a program like photoshop while mapping for BF2.

Off we fuck.

I think he wants to create textures/the map layout via the program.

Um. what i meant is, i have been trying to create maps so far with battlefield editor for pr but i need a photoshop type program to continue because, my demo for photoshop run out and i don't want to buy that expensive a program so..

will paintshop work? its about 60 dollars and in my price range.

Anybody use that program or should i just be the first to try it out. I am pretty sure i need it if i want to map heightmaps and textures for my pr map.

And for what it is worth i've started a couple maps already, didnt finish them, but i'm getting the itch again. But this time i want to get it done with the right tools.

I know that Paintshop Pro used to be a viable alternative to Photoshop, but I haven't used it in years. A free option (assuming there is no issue with file support) is Gimp. It's not as user-friendly as PS/PSP, but it is a powerful 2D editor. And free!

Just make sure you can export your height maps in 16bit .raws

Photoshop is the only real program you can use, gimp as mentioned might work but doubt it can handle the .raws as well and is just not as good as PS IMO :p

There are a couple of .raw plugs for Gimp, but again - not the easiest program to jump into. PSP seems to support .raw, so it might be a cost-effective alternative to PS.

GIMP
GIMP DDS plugin

I used GIMP for a while for modding work. Anyroad 'cause used to PS at office, sticking to it...

PS is commercial and costs ~1000€. GIMP is GNU - it's free...
