[Help] So I want to get started with modelling...

Post by sharpie »

So I'd like to start modelling things for PR. But first, I'd like to know where/how I can get started and how much money I will have to put into it.

As far as I know right now, I need 3ds Max9 (2009) Except I do not know where to find it. I have googled it and am sent here- Autodesk - 3D Design & Engineering Software for Architecture, Manufacturing, and Entertainment

I try to search for the 2009 version, but it will not let me 'find it' so to speak, it keeps pushing the new 2012 version at me. So I'm curious as to where I *might* be able to find it retail, and what I might expect money wise (in USD)

System Specs-

255 GB HDD
GPU- NVIDIA 240 GT
CPU- Intel SandyBridge i3-2100 @ 3.10 GHz
4 GB of DDR3

1600x900 Resolution on a HANNspree monitor

Thanks to whoever can push me in the right direction, I feel that it's time I should start giving a little something back to PR, whatever it may be.

It is max9, not 2009 that you need for the bf2 tools to work. I doubt autodesk even still sells 3ds max9.

Add me on xfire: tastyv :)

Creating a Weapon for Source tutorial - Mod DB
Beretta 9000 Video Tutorial - Mod DB

As usual, recommended tutorials. :)
Good luck, and feel free to ask questions here or on xfire etc.

That isn't too hard to do simply.

The nvidia DDS PS plugins have a normal map generating script (ie, generating it straight off a RGB texture) works ok but isn't very good but the heightmap to normal map conversion works just fine.

There is also the nDo PS scripts which are pretty hard to use but can get good effects: nDo

And if your willing to spend a bit of money, there is always CrazyBump which is the main thing I use and is really good for generating normal maps off of textures and getting lots of control and is nice and simple to use: CrazyBump

But to do really good normal maps, your best off making a high poly model and then baking the normal maps onto a low poly model from that, although making heightmaps is also a good method too but takes some time to do also.

Thanks :)

Does that works with 3Dmax9?

EDIT : I guess it works since Chuc's tutorial is done with max9
