Vietnam Friend/Foe identification woes

Post by ComradeHX »

Everyone dress in green-ish uniforms in slightly different shades.

This causes problem with identifying friendlies from foes; now almost only doable by the shape of their hat/helmet and rifle.

Maybe I need to increase resolution but that is not always feasible due to more requirement on hardware for others.

Today, I followed a squad of Americans as NVA Automatic Rifleman for 6 seconds until I got close enough to realize that they do not have nametags and shot four of them(then I got shot and rest of my allies got them all)...at that kind of distance, IRL, I could have identified them a lot farther away and probably take out all of them since they all turned their back to me.

What does everyone else use to solve this problem? Antialiasing? higher resolution?

Or perhaps PR:V should have a higher range of nametag display? perhaps make it faster when aiming at a friendly player?

You can a; check your map or b; learn what the uniform shades/hats look like. It's not that hard, especially since all engagements happen at close range anyway.

Agreeing with Ex its not difficult to tell the difference once you get used to them I play on all low settings and the only team kill I've gotten in PRV is when an American came around the stairs on cuda airfield while we were under attack by the NVA.

really not that hard to distinguise, one is tall skinny and wearing funny hats and sandles, others are beefy and light shade of green + the weapons they both carry should be enough

As stated above. Matter of getting used to it. Although I would love this feeling of paranoia to stay as long as possible. :P It adds immersion to the Vietnamese jungle warfare. ;]

Just look at the shoes, or just don't give a fuck and shoot at everything.

I find it best to check map and listen out for all the distinguishable weapon sounds.

Kind of like PR for anyone who is new, there are tricks to ID enemies and if you are using an enemy weapon be ready to take friendly fire or stay close to your squad.

yeah playing smart you shouldn't have a problem

anyways, has DEVS ever thought about a little map thing with dots?(always on screen but really small) like ARMA2 mods have

would be great for squad tactical movement

You already have these little arrows on your screen, indicating where squadmembers are.

NVA soldiers have short sleeves, IIRC.

I almost never TK mostly because of good situational awareness. In real life constant comms and strong training with regards to coordinated movements and not to mention a plethora of modern tricks (like IR markers and stuff or really strict ROE or protocols on implementing heavy assets) exist. In PR your best bet is to just constantly refresh your awareness of friendly positioning and intended direction of travel.

I always check my map when I sight targets and aren't sure if they're friendly or not. If I know there aren't friendlies to the West before I see the enemy there I can freely engage. I steal a glance frequently, scan it quickly, and pop back to my surroundings. 95% of my TKs generally come from the spook moment. When some guy runs into my sector in a building I'm guarding where the enemy is close.

Situational awareness is one of the more neglected skills in this game and you have to take advantage of all your assets to ensure you're on top of it.

I usually don't have much problems, though identification is really more difficult in prv than in vpr, especially on tad sae, but as NVA on Ia Drang I was meeting up with my squad and thought I finally caught up with them yet instead I walked for some time after a black guy. It was not untill he took an aim on me before I realised something was wrong :p

Check your map first. Save a friendly.

Yep they thought about it, and they deleted it from game becouse of one reason that is IRL reality, where we dont have eye implants yet :D

My suggestion is to often check map, stay with your SQ, report and identify contacts before u shoot!
