Doing your bit (recruitment)
Where do I start? Right, I've finally managed to buy a new PC after a couple of years of being unable to play PR smoothly on my old rig.
Upon returning to the server list, I was devastated to see how quiet the game is now compared to way back when. Don't get me wrong, it's by no means dead, but my job as a taxi driver means I do most of my gaming between 3AM-6AM UK time, and at that time there's one full server, 1 half full one and a few with 4 or 5 players in them.
Down hearted I went out and bought BF3, but that just plays like an arcade game typical of the console platforms. In other words, the very thing PR tries not to be...and for good reason.
Anyway, my nephew came round my house to have a butchers at the new PC, so I loaded PR and let him have a blast. I also gave him a blast at BF2 & BF3. He preferred PR hands down. The lad is going to be a new player here, he just needs a gaming PC (please can anyone post basic spec that will play PR comfortably?).
Then today, out of the blue, I got a call from a pal who I used to team up with in BF2, and he said he's going to give PR a whirl.
So the points of this thread are...talk your mates into giving it a go, play more often yourself, and help me out with spec advice for my nephew.

In your opinion. Your statement adds absolutely nothing to the thread and doesn't make you look that good.LieutenantNessie wrote:BF3>PR
OP: I think the North American servers should be populated around that time. At which day did you check the server list?

Nessie if you're so happy with bf3 and are above PR what are you still doing on these forums posting all these condescending remarks. You scoff at peoples opinion of this mod and seem to hold bf3 in high standards when quite frankly most of us PR players do not enjoy that style of game, it's for people who prefer to turn their brains off and play out of reflex. BF3 has their own forums go toot your horn over there please.
OT
I have got a few friends to try PR and while they did enjoy it most people have very small attention spans. The game fad of late is instant gratification with little effort, and it's a continuing trend that churns out crappy title after crappy title constantly recycling the same boring formula. It's a sad reality we face as the gaming industry is viewed as a business venture as opposed to a creative and expressive venue, I fear things will only continue down this path. There are still plenty of people who enjoy using their experience and problem solving to overcome the enemy out there and we can only hope they catch wind of the gem that is known as Project Reality. I do my best to spread the word, but there are plenty of distractions and the diminishing community only serves to put potential new players off. All any of us can do is enjoy this mod for what it's worth and hope the community grows by word of mouth.

As far as US goes, there's Hardcore server, CIA (you know, the mumble one), and TAR (very spotty that it gets full though).
I think there are plenty of German servers too, at least 2. The 762 server should be one (who also have a Normandy server if I'm not mistaken), as well as New Era Warfare.

A pilot, a parachutist, and a tanker. And maybe a bit of a human shield.

Just on a side note, when the new players do join, where can they learn how to use vehicles? I'm not competent enough yet, but I can no longer see the training server.

Re: Doing your bit (recruitment)
I would hate to see this game dying out. So yes recruitment should be something we all should engage in.
The game is still being sold and cheap, so we do have to catch new players that look for realistic gaming as there are not so many other choices for realism.
What about setting up an official promotion day. Like once a month everyone promoting the game in all the possible ways.

Re: Doing your bit (recruitment)
Great idea Nico. I do believe more could and should be done to attract more players and to get former players back. Now I can't ever remember getting a mailshot from this site, and I know some think of mailshots as spam, but a well worded email sent to the entire community, or just the members not signed in for the last year for example, saying how things have changed and the addition of Vietnam etc, may just give the game a boost. (that was a long sentence)
Love this game, its concept alone should be enough to draw in people, but they need to be made aware of it. Black Sands can't be seen spamming other games' forums, that would look desperate, but we the community can tell our gaming mates about it.

We had that I think I got mail updates twice then they just stopped.
One thing is that players get older and just stop playing.
The other thing is that they move on to different games and genres.
Only the hard core stay.
But we can find new players like this who never heard of this game.
As long BF2 sells we still have time promoting it.
But to catch this new players there have to be a good strategy for it, because there is already quite big promotion out there with YouTube and everything.
But do new players come?
Well that's things we have to discuss.

Re: Doing your bit (recruitment)
What I can't fathom is why each individual player has to download each map, when and if a new one is released. I might be wrong here, as it's been 10 years I reckon since BHD, but I'm pretty sure in that multiplayer game, you simply joined a server which may have had its own home made maps and played without the need to already have their map loaded on your PC.
Why do I mention this? Well, I reckon if a game is small in size at the user end, and there's less need to download & store this that and the other, I think it would be more appealing. I understand the maps need to get onto each users' PC some way, so if my memory is correct regarding BHD, then one must have downloaded each map while the game loaded between rounds. Or am I miles off here?
