Considering buying : Iiyama G2773HS-GB1 LED screen

Post by Saobh »

Hey guys,
One of my secondary 17" screen went belly up 2 days ago (capacitor problem it seems, as it shut off after 1 second of screen time) so its that moment where thoughts go from "gota replace it" to "why not upgrade it !"

Being in France my best choice is getting here :
Ecran informatique Iiyama G2773HS-GB1 LED - G2773HS-GB1 (3602656)

I work all day on the computer so having a bigger screen with a better refresh rate will ultimately have my eyes thank my brain.

My rig is :
Board: Asus P5Q DELUXE
ATI Radeon HD 4800 series
Intel core Duo CPU E8400 3.00Ghz (haven't overclocked it)
3.25 Go of RAM
What will become my secondary screen is my 23" Samsung SyncMaster 2233bw

On a windows XP (tried Vista and Windows 7 and don't much care for them)

So are there any comments about better choices or possible problems I might encounter ? Work is pretty heavy right now so I'd prefer not having to spend half a day troubleshooting after the fact.

Thanks for any input.

Keep in mind I am from the USA,

In the US, the king of the 24" to 27" class of TN LED LCDs are Samsung and Dell.

This review states you need a Dual Link DVI-D cable to actually get the 120Hz refresh rate:
(THis is really horrible in the price range) Iiyama ProLite G2773HS

I have never seen or heard of IIyama before so I really cant give you any more advice.

Most review websites have this as a competitor: BenQ XL2420T
I do not like BenQ monitors, cheap components.

Be aware that a 27" monitor is really big for a work PC if you are doing anything with text, spreadsheets or similar. So big you might need to increase the size of the default fonts because you can not simultaneously see the monitor close enough to read the fonts and see the entire monitor in your field of view.

But it is awesome for gaming. :P

Unknown manufacturer. I know nothing about their product so I cant speak of it much.

See a lot better on that site, and Id say go with Samsung > C27A550U - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG

Ecran informatique Samsung C27A550U (3570401)

Tad cheaper than one you selected and known brand. Size does matters, keep in mind that this thing is huge for usage with PC. I think 24" would be enough, but if you really want go with 27".

Reading that review however about Ilyama and it sounds good, and I hope that writer is honest.

Best of luck.

In case it matters, 1920x1080 in 27" will have really big pixels. I use a 24" 1920x1200 and I can see the individual pixels fairly easily.
If you are sitting pretty far away from your monitor it will be fine, otherwise, depending on your eyes, it will look pixelated or blurry and aliasing will be more obvious.

Thanks for the input guys.

Indeed kind of surprised that Iiyama isn't known as it was one of the best brands in CRT 15-20 years ago (if you had any problem with their screen they would replace it, no questions asked) Tho flat screen wise I'll just have to see

I was going for the Samsung C27A550U initially but noticed in time that it didn't have any DVI input which is a bit of a problem as my graphic card has only 2 DVI outputs. Thus the Iiyama with the dual DVI option, I can always buy an other graphic card later on as having a secondary screen is pretty necessary now when working.

If anyone is interested I'll give you my feedback on it later on.

Indeed what people above saying - Samsung all the way panel and color wise. I still have my 5 years old LCD Samsung monitor and it still feels like brand new. ;)

You can use a DVI to HDMI adapter for the Samsung. It's possible your card even came with one, so check wherever you stored all the extras. ;)

Hehe yeah ... I remembered that just after I hit the "BUY" button ...

Well I should be getting it tomorrow morning so I'll see if it was worth it.

I can always get the Samsung as a secondary screen later
(ok I'll probably need to get a bigger apartment to fit it all in at that point)
