Ye, BF2's gfx engine isn't that bad tbh, sure its normal map rendering is a bit dated etc but you can still get really nice looking model in BF2 and IMO, looking a lot better than some of the modern engines that are constantly shoving effects over everything...Stealthgato wrote:No, look at FH2 and some of the weapons in PR aswell.
The biggest problem in PR is that we have so much stuff, we can't have super high res textures otherwise players will run out of ram when loading into a map, and CTD (even with like 8gbs since BF2 is a 32bit program and as such, is limited by that). As such many of our weapon/vehicle textures have to be only 1024x1024 pixels or lower, when really we have made them in 2048x2048, sometimes even 4096x4096 or even higher (2048x2048 is the max BF2 can use btw, which saved in DXT5 with full mips, is like 5.33mbs just for one sheet, when you also have normal map sheets etc too) so we are simply forced to have our textures a lot lower than we would like them to be, just so you can play the game.
Now in mods like Alpha Project where they have very little in the ways of content (no offense to them), they can easily have 2048x2048 textures just for the player's hands and will no where near reach the ram limit of BF2 because they don't have all the other stuff we have to load on top of that.
We are looking at optimizing areas of the mod and the more we optimize, the more we can then bulk up our texture sizes for some items, like 1st person weapon textures
