Going from 4gb ram to 6. Will it help?

Post by cyberzomby »

Hi guys,

I've searched the forums for topics about ram and couldn't find any (curiously enough). And I looked at the first 6 pages and couldn't find anything as well.

I'm on a 4 year old macbook pro (bought it for my graphical study back then) which could run PR on medium/high at the start. Lately with PR improving I need to set it on low/medium. It will lag a lot on maps with a lot of scenery/players (128 player server... :( ) Which is also the reason I don't play PR anymore.

Will it help much if I go upgrade my ram from 4 to 6 gb? Or is it just a drop in the ocean.

Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Geheugen 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Videokaart NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB

I'll also keep a look out for custom build PC topics here now that I have a job, as I'm thinking about getting a gaming PC that can also video-edit work on 3d motion video's. Am I right that if you have a good gaming PC you can also do that on the machine? Or do you need different sort of hardware for video-editing/graphical work?

You would need a better processor and DDR3. I don't think adding more RAM will help, 4GB should be enough to run most games.

So if my machine can handle it, it would be an idea to replace the DDR2 with '3s. Hmmm! Should look in to that

Or try to overclock your RAM to run on higher speeds, depending on your motherboard it could be a simple procedure.

In order to use DDR3 you would need to get a new motherboard. Also, your CPU is the biggest bottleneck, upgrading to DDR3 would just be a bonus to upgrading the CPU.

Alright! Thanks everyone. RAM is the only thing I can upgrade in my macbook so like I said, I guess its just off to saving for a new machine :)

Cyber - you need upgrade. Putting money in existing machine is a waste because what you get from upgrade have very little benefit. Better start saving for something more powerful. ;)

Cyber, I can give you a definitive test you can try immediately,
But first, what OS do you use, XP, Vista, win7 ? is it the 32 or 64 bit version?

GO to this link:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... b-ram.html

Make sure you follow the directions for your specific OS !!

reboot, start PR, see if it helps.

Also, you might be able to free up more of your existing RAM using IObit Gamebooster, Game Booster 3 Free Download, Speed Up PC for Top Gaming Performance

IF after doing the fix-memory-errors-allow-applications-use-2gb-ram and setting up and using gamebooster, you are seeing a real improvement to your FPS and playability in PR, then yes, for $25 Euros buying another stick of RAM is a good short term solution to extend the life of your MacBook.

If you see no improvement, then no, do not waste the money on the RAM, and start saving up for the new PC.

I have stuttering problems now at 4 gb DDR3 Win7 64. When I run BF2 my memory works at 96%+
I have a lot of background programs and by just closing Firefox I get down to 90% and problems go away.
Yet I'm upgrading to 8 gb.
