Project Reality on Steam? (Greenlight)

Post by Bluedrake42 »

...can we do this?
maybe Steam straight up doesn't support any mods besides source mods...
but Desura does... so I don't see why Steam wouldn't, now that Greenlight is a thing.

mods on steam are completely free, you don't even have to own anything now since the source SDK and plenty of source games are free to play, Greenlight has a lot of free to play and mod stuff going up

You have to pay a 100$ entry free ( it used to be free, but random people started spamming other peoples games and mods ) and you can host anything you want and you can make it free. You can't make profit out of mods unless you licensed the engine, all the mods on steam are completely free. BMS and many other source mods are already up for votes.

Imo PR should invest into greenlight, would bring many new players if it gets into steam methinks.

I would support this if it's possible to get PR working with steam, it'd be a nice way to make PR 1.0 even more special.

The only problem with it being on Steam would be Valves irrepressible need to stick their noses in, they would expect regular updates to make the hosting costs worthwhile, they would also need a guaranteed sale and because BF2 is so cheap now it wouldn't bring in enough.

How much is BF2 Vanilla these days?

If a combined download for BF2/PR was as simple as a few clicks, pay and play, then I would guarantee it would become very popular.

Reason? Well, to play all the latest, graphics demanding, 'cool' games like DayZ & BF3, you really need to have a decent spec PC, or a gaming PC if you will.

So, a game like PR that would run on many machines that would struggle to run the aforementioned cool games, would surely appeal to those who own the lower spec PC's.

The marketeers for PR would just need to spin the game as cool in its own right, and I believe, as a dedicated disciple of PR, that it is cool. Ultimately cool. Defined cool. Yes, it's the coolest, literally. Because we don't just run and gun, right? We get lost in a world of fantasy as we pretend to be real soldiers. That's the difference between the mayhem of your CODs and BF3s.

Yes, I do talk in riddles.

why wouldnt it work? no point that people say that it doesnt work if you dont explain your self.

I think its a great idea and it will attract more people to this mod.

My oppinion to that would be that PR uses BF2 engine which EA licensed, and EA and Steam are kind of like 2 crows fighting over one nut.

Dont get me wrong would be nice and simple if it were on steam as a mod, but as things are now (unless the modteam gets a hold of source code for bf2) things wont go in favour of PR being on steam.

Adding PR to Steam as mod would work, no problem. It would simply install itself to 'common/Battlefield 2/mods' or to user defined place (Steam supports that too now, who would have known). As PR is a mod for BF2, I do not know if EA has any grounds to not allow it as its content is made by PR & other mod's devs (Steam does also sell BF2 you know).

Only problem is that PR uses some of EAs files which don't come with vanilla BF2 so the version on Steam would might require you to buy bf2 complete where these would be acquired or download these files from PR site. Atm, I think they have some content from Special Forces, releasing that on steam is most likely not possible (Unless EA says ok, which they might as they could get some sells for BF2).

If the PR package was 100% content made by PR devs, Steam release doesn't have any reason not to be possible.

I dont think you did your research my friend.

steam doesn't even sell "vanilla". it only sells "complete collection" from what I can see, which contains special forces.

trust me...u dont need special forces..... just bf2 and all the patches and the 3 parts of pr and your good to go

Installation order

If you do not have Battlefield 2 v1.5 installed:

Depending on what version of BF2 you have, you may have to install BF2 differently. The end result will be Battlefield 2 installed, with the v1.5 patch. For the most common type of install, the retail version, you would do the following:

Install Battlefield 2
Optional: Battlefield 2: Special Forces Expansion
Install Battlefield 2 v1.41
Install Battlefield 2 v1.5

You are wrong. Pr uses only BF2 stuff. You only need BF2 1.5, no Special Forces whatsoever.

Weird, I saw many thing from SF(Grappling hook, mansion, airport terminal, parking lot and much more) used in PR, so I thought that it's required.

It does use SF stuff. Thing is all the SF files are available in patches (how do you think unlocks worked for people without SF). IIRC the Devteam has permission to use them (since you werent really allowed to do that without making it require SF)
