Language is a huge problem...

Post by Jolly »

Tried one round in CIA, this night, but I've suddely find myself unable to speak actually English!
I was supposed to say "Hey! Enemy in front of me!" But I said "Enemy is on me" which made me quiet embarassing. :o ops:

So, I am requesting you guys list me some Basic military words that can be used during PR Gaming. :-P
We can gather those words to help those players from non-English speaking region. :D

Guys help!! Thanks in advance. :-P

It's not the military words.

It is the order they are spoken, as your example demonstrates. And plenty of native English speakers make the same mistake as you, ...

At least once a day I use my joke "I think (squadmate John) means the OTHER South", this happens even when John is a native English speaker.

The easiest thing to do is explain headings in relation to Cardinal direction (North South East West), as in,
"I am heading east, enemies due east, enemies heading south."

It doesn't matter what language you speak, when a guy says "I see enemy over there." Without giving any other info, no one knows WTF he is talking about.

Watch Star Trek The Next Generation and watch Sir Patrick Stewart play Captain Jean-Luc Picard using some very very awesome language. "Make it so". On a real tip, watch some american war movies and watch how actual soldiers might talk. Hurt Locker, Band of Brothers, the Pacific. Restrapo was a good docomentary, Semptember tapes was a good fake documentary.

My english level increased in a retarded way (but it increased) play PR online (back in the 0.4!). Don't worry, keep playing and you will get there.
[R-DEV]OkitaMakoto:"Cheers, you're the man, Okita"
[R-DEV]Rhino:"I in fact got kicked from a server for tking."
Hitperson:"well done, treasure it forever."
[R-DEV]Adriaan:"Damned classy Roma, if I may say so."
[R-DEV]Chuc:"Pro man, pro."
(yes, it was about me)
[R-MOD]BloodBane611:"Romagnolo, you definitely deserve a LOL award for that."

Jolly, you just need to speak and listen as much as you can. Language can't be learned in 1 day, but if you working hard(no life, just PR :D ), you can get good results in few weeks(maybe months).

Also, you can find people like you, i'm pretty sure that they will try to speak not too fast.

Language is not a problem, it is an opportunity :D

I really enjoy talking/listening to some English when playing PR because it is the only place where I need to do so : )

When do you play?

Speak in Chinese, I translate. lol

In any case, is better than english speaking players in SAGA server. (was playing from China this summer vacation when most players in China were taking those exams)

Doesn't matter if you fail at speaking English, just keep trying and it will go better. It's a skill you have to master, and everyone slips up time to time.

I have played too much in Chinese Server, I havent play PR in US server for over monthes. SAGA server sometimes really turn you mad, cause of some players and map rotation.
I think, I should stick with U.S server for some period then go back, play PR with westerner do different from the native.

I'm sure your squadmates didn't feel angry that you struggle with English. In the end I think we forget it's a game to be played for fun sometimes. Just relax and tell your squadmates that you are still perfecting your English, I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to help you learn without insulting or making you feel dumb (so far the only one that seems to be doing that is you).

Quit being so shy/ashamed and keep going the direction you are, the results can only be better English.

The advice in here is good. Go out there and learn by doing, that's the best way to learn. I've sucked at English in school, got horrible grades. Then I got internet access, and suddenly I was so good, I made English one of my two main courses for the final school exams and even got a good grade (sadly I'm mixing American and British English all the time, and I'm not that good at formal grammar rules (having had Latin, that's a shame, but... ya. I've never really learned what the different grammatical constructs are even called in English, because I didn't need that to speak it).

Needless to say, in the heat of the battle I might accidentally drop half a German sentence. Or when speaking to local friends, I might accidentally drop half an English sentence, even.

Well we were in the same Squad (USF) on Lashkar Valley (CIA) yesterday and you did not seem to have major problems with English : )

Just try to talk along and you'll be fine ;)
