Lag in 'populated' areas

Post by ma21212 »

Hi, Im experiencing lag in places where there is alot of action, people, things w/e. one example is in borderlands 2, when there's alot of enemies fps gets cut in half. Another is on some maps like Fallujah, if I look into the city fps gets cut in half. So my question is, is this normal? is my gpu getting old and thats just it? also Ive not defragmented my harddrives in ages and I have alot of data on them so might that be the cause?

I have not OCd any thing, temps for cpu are around 60 (in game) and for the gpu around 50 (in game)

run borderlands 2 on almost max (vsync off and anti aliasing 4x), PR (max)
cpu: Intel 930
gpu: ATI 5870 1024mb
ram: 6gigs
hd: WD Caviar Black 640GB (x2) almost full
windows 7 64

Yes that is perfectly normal, even top range systems will cut their frame rate as soon as the going gets tough.

Think of it this way, as soon as you get close to enemies, they appear on your screen. As soon as they appear on your screen, the computer not only has to render the pixels for them, but also calculate what they are going to do and all the other small things that work in the background.

There's no harm in doing a disk defrag, it can cut loading times and things like that, but possibly not improve frame rates by much unfortunately...

It maybe that it is your system getting old, as games get newer, they obviously make them look prettier and do more complicated AI, and that in turn takes more power to process. But your system should be able to run new games, just maybe not as high as it used to.
