I think it would be useful for tanks because there is always a possibility for the driver to get his head blown off by a sniper when he is on HMG or surveying outside. Now both of the previous actions have their uses but I think the option for turning the engine off should be there

As long as its not a drag to program then this would definitely be a subtle but nice feature to add to the game just one of those hundreds of things that add a little something to PR.

Nice and realistic for armour operators but when the driver's out that's one of the rare moments that infantry can put armour out of action.

Turning off an engine irl isn't realistic :p . But I get the point ;) .

The BF2 engine doesn't support turning off an engine though. The only way to have a similar thing (I think) is to have an extra seat. And a Python thing: you can't enter the driver or extra seat if one of them is already in use.

(but didn't we have a thread about this already?)

Maybe it's in the best interest of gameplay for armor to be fundamentally less aware of their local surroundings. It could encourage armor to coordinate further with soft-skinned vehicles/infantry if they want to survive.

I realize that how we shut our engines off in game in armour may not be realistic (2 second engine checks), but IRl wouldn't tanks shut off their engine if they were laying in an ambush wand waiting, I don't have any sources or experience, just thinking what I would do if I was concealed in a nice spot.

Putting a fourth seat in the tank that required a crewman and had the near same sights as the commander could allow the engine to be shut off, and hopefully without too much coding work. In my opinion there wouldn't be a drawback either of allowing there to be a person in the fourth seat, when there is a driver aswell. Most of the time it would be a waste of man power, and noone would do it and the rare time people would fully crew a tank you could get great 360 coverage and eyes everywhere.

By the sounds of it it'll probably better to leave it as is because its not an addition that really needs that much work to add.

It is in some case i watched a documentary few month ago ( i cant remember the title) where some US armored vehicle had some batterys to allow the electronic and turret to work with engine turned off U boat style

My uncle is a master mechanic who works on Abrahams at Aberdeen PG in Maryland, I'll ask him what he thinks of turning off the engine.

What I would like to see more off is the quiet idle like the german apc and warrior have. They don't get really loud until you go to move them, while they are still, they are pretty silent. OR:

Seperate the Thermal Parascope and the Drivers positon so you just switch to the parascope and cut the engine. Not sure if cutting the engine is realistic, but neither is not being able to, or having a driver of a tank looking 360 degrees on thermal as they are moving 60mph.

The driver and commander positions of a real life tank and are all put into the driver's position, same as the loader and gunner is only a gunner.

piggybacking off the post it would be nice if the guns on tanks stayed operational so you could have the Main gunner on the hmg and still be weapons ready when times comes. It helps to be more aware of what is going on and a better view. It would be so helpful for me, idk know about you guys though

Can't you guys just make that "2" button the Linx_esp mentioned force the vehicle to have its speed set to 0 and its sounds muted somehow? It would be just SEEM like the engine was indeed turned off, and that's what really matters, because, in practice, that's pretty much what happened.

I mean, as far as I understand, there is, for instance, afterburner for jets in vBF2 (no idea about PR, though :D ), and, as far as I understand, the jet's speed is changed when you press that afterburner button, along with its sound. Can we do something similar?

it could be like when you are driving you have to be in driver slot while you still have that small squary thing to look threw. and when you press 2 engine stops and you are in commander seat.
with this tank crews have to think more before they use there tank, so when the tank is moving, that tank gunner is that tanks eyes.

there is afterburner on most jets in this game. but A10 and frogfoot dont have it.

there is already a boost button and that is shift for land vehicles. you wont see a big difference while driving on flat ground but if you go uphill and press shift that can give you that little extra and get you up there.

^ He's talking about a button that temporarily mutes the engine noise - like how pressing the afterburner button in a jet gives you the loud jet engine noise (but we want the opposite really).

Sounds like an interesting idea.

Turning off the engine was suggested often in our [QRF] Armor Squad. I specialy like this idea too. In RL you can turn the engine also off and turn and operate the tank/apc with the batteries. To recharge them the engine needs to turn on.

(Would be a fucking great feature if the tank has a endurance bar like infantry what is the batterie status. To recharge it you need to turn engine on) :) :)

I think vehicles that support turning off should get such extra seat. Could be so that this one is not visible and only one driver can get in each seat. Like AfterDune discribed.
