Can't set .exe as a default program on Win vista

Post by Rudd »

I recently had to move to my laptop due to the graphics card on my PC sadly passing into the next world.

So lots of teething issues on getting my PR modding stuff setup but the annoying thing atm is that I can't set WTV as my default .DDS viewer, this slows down work considerably.

Tried in the open with... option and in the default programs window and the associate filetypes with programs window.

I click browse, go to WTV, and all that...but it doesnt add WTV to the list of programs and it doesn't associate .dds with WTV.

Any help is appreciated.

Change which programs Windows uses by default

There is a clickable section that says
If a program does not show up in the Programs list
If a program does not show up in the list, you can make the program a default by using Set Associations.

1.Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Default Programs.

2.Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

3.Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.

4.Click Change program.

5.Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)

If you don't see the program you want to use as the default, click the arrow next to Other Programs to see a list of programs available on your computer

6.Click OK.
Have you tried that?
Best line yet...

yeah I've done that multiple times, but after selecting WTV via the browse menu, it doesnt get added to the list of programs and it doesn't get selected to open the file in this instance either.

Try Method 3 on this link:
Default Programs - Vista Forums

If that fails, you can download one of the .reg files in Method 1, open it in notepad and manually change the file type to .DDS and program to WTV, resave the .reg with new name, and run it as admin.
