Disconnected from any server - not punkbuster

Post by slappymcnutface »

I'm able to join any server and typically play for a few minutes with no problems, but eventually I'll get a massive lag spike & that white message "losing connection to server" (or whatever it says in-game) for about 10 seconds until I lag out.

It's not keypackets, and I don't think it's punkbuster.
It may be my internet here because I do get dropped from other games occasionally, just not half as often or consistently as BF2.

So attempting to diagnose my own problem.. does anyone know if a severed connection (even for a second) would cause the 10 second lag-spike then drop? Or would it just drop immediately?

Anyways I'm running Vista 32-bit and never had this problem before - would appreciate any help!

You're not using wireless or other non-wired internet connection?

Does this happen in vBF2 as well?

I'm wired through a router - which has given me trouble in the past. But I'm not sure that's it because I don't get dropped from other games including vBF2.

Thanks for at least reading my post..

Another question is if the OP uses ADSL, as certain ISPs assign a dynamic IP which is reset even on PPPoE/A dropouts which would result in the aforementioned disconnection behavior. If the ISP doesn't refresh your IP the servers can usually handle the 2-5 second dropout while it reestablishes the connection.

Alright so after some extensive testing it seems to be my WGT624 router not working with BF2.

It has also disconnected me from vBF2, but any other online game I play I have no problems.

I'm really not great with software involving interweb connections so if you ask me to port-forward or something, please include a simple guide somewhere!

From past troubleshooting, it tends to be some kind of anti-UDP flood mechanism, stemming from the BF2 VOIP (apparently).

So your first point of call can be to temporarily disable your router's firewall and see if that fixes the problem. This will narrow it down to a firewall problem, at which point we can troubleshoot further.

I hope I'm right about this because it'll reinforce my smugness towards know-it-alls. :-P
