If you can find a source to suggest flare guns where/are used for this purpose, then I might consider it. Only use I see for a flare gun might be a pilot for CASEVAC? Flares don't generally illuminate the surrounding area...

And having to rely on mortars for an illumination shot to me doesn't sound like a bad thing?

Did they use man portable mortars but? in PR the mortars don't really have the range to be much help on Falklands, unless they get field guns with massive range or a pickup man portable mortar illumination rounds wouldn't be very effective I don't think
