How long until we can't log into BF2 anymore?

So apparently GameSpy's new owners have recently been shutting down login and multiplayer services for "old" games.

Battlefield 2 uses GameSpy for login and server browsing, and isn't that much younger than some of the games that they pulled support from.

This move comes only months after GameSpy's acquisition by GLU Mobile, a publisher of "freemium" games across mobile, tablet and browsers, in August.

Rebellion, the developers of Sniper Elite, made an official announcement, explaining the situation to their community, in which they state that, "this decision by Glu was not taken in consultation with us and was beyond our control."

"We have been talking to them since to try and get the servers turned back on. We have been informed that in order to do so would cost us tens of thousands of pounds a year - far in excess of how much we were paying previously."

So either pay lots of money to keep it up, or pay lots of money and make your own system. Is any of that likely for BF2? I have my doubts to be honest.

I'll continue to hope for the best, but I have to say I'm a bit worried now.

Compared to the games who got shut down, BF2 is still going strong.
I doubt they will turn off the master servers anytime soon.
And even if they do, I'm sure the community will find a solution. No need to start an apocalyptic discussion here.

Unless I'm mistaken, usually am mind you, aren't the servers used for PR different from those of BF2? So the only setback would be log in information? Isn't that easily fixed by using a minecraft-esque login where you sign up on the forums/website and it's linked across all servers? Its not like our stats are lost forever, all we have are server specific stats that come with cool forum signature badges...

If master servers got shut down you would need to somehow connect with a singleplayer account, but then the key server would also be down so the game would be full of hacks due to no punkbuster.

I hope if they do shut down the servers they will patch the game in a way that it can be run without their servers.
And what do you mean by serverS? How much data is needed for the login? Wouldnt like one server somewhere in the basement of EA be sufficient?
