[Laptop]Dust in the fan making my games and audio stutter?

Post by Inspektura43 »

Is it possible dust to make the laptop video/audio stutter.

Something like this Samsung R480 stuttering problem - YouTube happens.Only on games, on videos its rare.

I have tried pretty much everything, from checking DPC latency which goes from 100 to 250, to installing/reinstalling/uninstalling (or whatever you would call it) drivers, changing power settings, the only think I havent done yet is clearing the laptop fan, which makes some strange noise.I havent done that because its very hard to open my laptop, Ive done it only once but didnt reached the heatsink.Maybe its thermal paste problem?.Ive cleaned it from outside using compressed air.The temperatures go like: IDLE:30-40 PLAYING PR:60-70-75.
The running procceses are 30, ive checked all of them, they are not the problem, tho my cpu goes around 50-70-100 when I play PR (I play it on low, 800x600) and the sound stutters like in the video I gave you link to. (not with so many freezes but still stutters).
Ive tried playing without audio/video (on VGA) wifi ports drivers, still the same.
Ive tried updating drivers, going on older versions, still the same..
Tried playing without external speakers, microphone, on battery, without battery, bought new battery, still the same. When I increase the volume its is stuttering even more, for example when I go into a heli and increase the volume and while holding Ctrl and moving the mouse to look around the sound sound crackling, popping and the video stutters.
Tried updating bios which didnt worked.Disabling Powermizer didnt worked.
I usually use Gamebooster/TuneUp Utilities and all kind of stuff that makes the computer ugly but run games on good framerate.
Also reinstalled/updated Punkbuster, which I am sure its not the problem, didnt worked.

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5738G
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel(R) Core 2DUO CPU T6500 @2.10GHz (2CPUs), ~2.1GHz
4GB ram

My pagefile is around 6084mb.
Ive tried changing didnt worked.
My antivirus is not the problem, my firewall is off, UAC off, always run on High Performance.
So my question is, can the Dust in the fan and heatsink make this problem?I am sure there is alot of dust in there, I have never cleaned the heatsink I have the laptop from 5-6 years.I havent changed thermal paste aswell.I open it from underneath Image
and clean it from dust with compressed air once a month. Also clean the heatsink from outside. And yes the vents where the fan is are closed but thats not the problem, im sure.
If anyone had this problem before and fixed it please help! And could this be something with the proccesor? And the hardware?
Thanks for reading!

Oh, and when I run PR on low priority theres less audio/video stuttering but I lose alot of FPS.

Yeah it can, since it razes the temperature since the exhaust ports get blocked then air cant circulate, and the only way to fix it is to open it up, or send it to the a shop to have it cleaned, you can blow air into it, but then youd be sending the dust inwards, which will pile onto new dust, and in the end itll make it even worse, since dust on heatsinks tends to make nice little dust carpets.

you can check if your ports are clogged just putting your hand on it, also checking the temps and such while doing something that taxes the system.

If you are planing on opening it your self, make sure you know full well what you are doing, and dont yank on anything, and finally I dont know how its assembled, but if you cant get to the CPU and GPU, just by unscrewing the bottom screws, then dont go any farther, that means youll have to remove the keyboard and everything to get to it, and it isnt worth the risk, since you can easily brake the dingy little clamps that hold the flat cables for the keyboard and touchpad

There is only one unforgivable lie That is the lie that says, This is the end, you are the conqueror, you have achieved it and now all that remains is to build walls higher and shelter behind them. Now, the lie says, the world is safe.? The Great Khan.

Well after I remove the harddrive I can see pretty much everything from there, expect for the heatsink.
I think I'll go send it to service, so they can clean it.

Thanks!

I made good money in University cleaning out dust in laptop cooling heatsinks.

Yes, it causes this problem all the time.

If your laptop is no longer under warranty, look online for a step by step guide to disassembling your laptop.

Or, I'll do it for you:
PDF guide:
service-manual-Acer-Aspire-5738G-5738ZG-5738Z-5738-5338-5536-5536G-5236

Youtube tutorials:

Time is money, but usually no need to pay someone 40 Euros to unscrew 20 screws, then rescrew 20 screws.

This thing is killing me
Cleaning didnt worked..Now the thing that concerns me is the laptops lan port..When I put the cable inside it doesnt *click*.
Though when I stop the lan driver it is still the same, stuttering piece of ****.

For example when I go into the audio settings in PR and move the slider I hear this stuttering noise..Its awful :(

Had a similar problem with my old pc when I was playing arma 2 and constantly crashed, cleaned it out and it worked perfect. My laptop on the other hand seems to be running slower and slower each day, used to be able to play the old NFS games, now it cant even play music without stuttering. Have you tried reformatting it? Helped me a lot in the past.

Edit: the lan port on my old pc didn't click when I stuck a cable in but never caused any issues.

How much memory are you running? Did you try disabling virtual memory? If you have 6 or more gigs it shouldnt be an issue.

Hi Inspektura,
Happy New Years!

Your Video card is just nominally holding up for PR, you might be running into thermal issues, it is overheating and causing the stuttering.

You know what your options are,

Disassemble and replace thermal paste on CPU and GPU.

Possibly cut a few small holes in exterior to increase airflow to GPU. Just a suggestion, and please be careful and read up on this mod before trying.

Completely uninstall and then reinstall your GPU drivers.
You might need to try a few different drivers versions unfortunately,
Drivers | GeForce

Update any drivers you think might be needing an update:

Hi Litoralis,
Happy New year!

Here are the temperatures where I get minor video/audio stuttering.

While watching videos/surfing the net:
Image
(ex: watching a video on youtube, and start moving the youtube player volume thing, will get crackling sound and video stuttering no-mather whether 1080p or 240p video)

While playing as heli-pilot on mutthrah:
Image
(as I gave example in my first post, when I move my mouse to look from the helicopter I would get this crackling sound;when flying;when simply walking would get random freezes, audio/video stuttering)

I will consider putting new thermal paste and maybe cut a few holes down there

Thanks for the help!

I think your issue might be your GPU overheating.

Grab HWMonitor or whatever program you prefer, and track that,

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

As mentioned above, you might want to remove your pagefile and reboot, then start PR, to see if the suttering is caused by your HDD getting old, or bad sectors in your pagefile, or a fragmented pagefile.

The other thing you can do is do a diagnostic test of your hard drive, make sure you do not have bad sectors.

And stress test your RAM, but this is IMHO the least likely cause of your problem.

Have you tried updating your sound drivers?

Yes, I've tried updating/going back to earlier driver, didnt worked.

Btw disabling the pagefile didnt worked.
