More ALT layers?

More ALT layers?

Hey guys,

A lot of servers tend to play the same maps over and over (sometimes for good reason, ex. when server population is low).

I was wondering if we could get more Alternative layers for overplayed maps such as kashan or burning sands (and others as well).

I dont know if (for example) Kashan and Burning Sands are based on real battles (probably not since they're fighting a fictonal faction), so maybe an idea would be to switch factions.

Have british fighting on kashan w/ apaches for cas. (maybe harrier for jests if DEVs like that).

and maybe put US Army on Burning for a change?

Just a thought to spice things up in PR.

I dont know how long it would take to create such a change, so I don't know if DEVs will want to deal w/ something like this right now.

We are doing this more and more... so yes, you will see some additional layers in v1.0. and some of them have faction changes. Just remember that we have to use the same voices, so we can't switch MEC to IDF, etc.

6x Huey transport
1x Logistics truck

MEC
2x T-72
2x MLTB 30mm
4x Transport truck
3x logistics truck
3x UAZ

Heavy urban armour combat? In my project reality?

So why have we never used junction points to work around the voices barrier?

Adding new alt layers would cost no more than 40MB for all new alt layers
needed, ever.

because there isn't already Apaches on Kashan, if the brits were on Kashan and they had 4 of their ridiculously OP AAVs i'd never fly on mec again

how the hell is the brit AAV OP, it's so fucking slow, and fragile the round usually over by the time you make it to a relevant point, or you tracked yourself on the way.

Slow? The Stormer is faster then the Challenger on a road.

I haven't used it in a long time, but last time I checked it was pretty fast. Its top speed in r/l is 50mph/80kmph, the same as the Scimitars, it shouldn't be slow?

There are a few massive problems with making "Alt Layers". The first is the amount of work it is to do, but to mainly test. To toughly test all the layers we make is next to impossible. We only really find out if they are fully working after release and most normally have quite a few little bugs in them that we then fix in the next version, providing we don't try and mess things up again too much. The biggest problem of course is balance testing which takes a load of tests with full servers to really get an idea if the map is balanced and needs any changes.
But the biggest problem of all is nearly always this work is totally wasted because servers only tend to player one layer which they feel is the best/most popular so all that work that went into making them and testing them, was a total waste.

Overall, we could be working on better things IMO most of the time than layers no servers run and no one plays.

The Harrier GR9 was retired (early) from 2009 to 2011. We can't use the Harrier in anything but historical maps like the Falklands now :(

i like the idea of tanks on muttrah. it would make Docks a much more important flag.

unfortunately a lot of people like to quickly cap docks and rush into north city.

even the logi at docks is rarely used.

This would make more use of the Logi then. Repair & Engineering vehicle for the tanks :D

There was a bug report about the Stormer in 0.966 that it was (and still is in 0.973) broken. It was fine in 0.957 and next patch something went wrong.

It's super slow, slides all over the place, has no climb ability and takes terrain damage even on flat ground.

The Stormer has already been fixed and the new version will be in v1.0. :)

Stormer and avenger both have 8 missiles, the avenger has a gun and is faster. I stormer isn't OP at all.

avenger being so weak balances it out , only need to hit within 20m and its dead

I would love to see a layout with infantry and light vehicles only ... no tanks, no heavy apcs, jets or attack helicopters.

it would be a great alternative to skirmish when the servers are half full...
