[HELP] BF2Editor Road Tool

Post by Ason »

Hello, I have been trying to create roads by using the editors road tool. I have been looking at these tutorials while doing it:
Roads - Detailed Explanation - Official BF Editor Forums
Understanding Roads
they are basically the same tutorial only diffrence is the pics on skribbulz.

They say you can place spline points by either right-clicking on the ground and pressing "create new spline" or you can hold alt while pressing left mouse button.
My problem is i seem to be using 2 diffrent functions when doing it in these 2 ways.
When i do it by holding alt it connects the blue spline points with a blue line between all the points. When i do it by right-clicking on the ground i only get the points without the connections.
Doing it by right-clicking splines:
after i made my first spline, I create the control point, then i continue placing out about 6 more splines in the shape i want the road to go. Then i mark a point in the middle of the road. After that i chose a road template(by just marking it in the resource tab i guess) so i am able to see the parameters(width of the road etc.). Then i press connect in the right window. It now asks me for a name of the road, after that i should see all the points connect according to the tuts i followed, but i don't ? :S Nothing happens...
Doing it by holding alt and left clicking on ground:
If i do it with alt and left click i automatically get the connection-line between the points, and I am now able to double click on a middle point to make it mark all of the points, which is not possible when adding the points by right-clicking. and now as I wrote this I tried it out and now I got it to work, but only with the alt left-click solution to add the spline points.

It seems to be some bug with the connection thing, or am i just doing it wrong? Appriciate all the help i can get :)

It works correctly. As you said when you right click it makes a NEW spline and when u apt click it makes a new spline POINT thus continuing the road. Afaik

ok I don't quite see exactly what the problem is but if you left click with alt you get the new spline with the auto connect which is the easiest way, then double click one of the splines in that road and it will highlight the whole road, then choose a road template then click connect and name it.

If you right click you are making a whole new "road", get what I mean? Like If I right click make a spline thats the start of road one, if I right click again that would make the start of road 2.

Just click the spline you want to continue and hold alt the left click.

Right clicking is used to create SEPARATE splines - i.e. separate roads

Alt-click creates new points on the currently selected spline - to extend a road

these are two different tasks, want a new road, right click, want a longer road left+alt

Alright yeah to be honest by the end of that post i wasn't sure either what my problem was xd, but now i tried to make a road again, a longer one with like 50 points, the problem is when i have made the points and connected them to get the road template onto the ground, after i elevate the points a bit so the road is a bit over the ground and press apply spline it doesn't connect the ground to the road, the only thing that happens is that all the terrain and ground disappears and im left with a road floating in the air. anybody knows what the problem is ? Btw i had this problem before aswell until the one time i got it to work just as i was finishing my first post :P
Also one thing which i don't understand is, in the tutorials they say the FIRST point is a control point, but i need to first make a spline point then make a controlpoint, is this right and does it matters where to put the controlpoint? And if anybody knows, what is the controlpoint for ?

EDIt: And btw i don't know if it matters or not but im trying to make a serpentine road, the ones that goes on the side of the mountains, don't know if it has anything to do with my problem.

when you use the button apply final road.

Also I see you asking a lot of questions about mapping on all the threads, which I think is good cause that means you are mapping :D But maybe it's better to all direct your questions to a single thread about your map? So it's easy to track problems occurring on your mapping progress? Just a suggestion :)

Ok thanks for the help and tips man :) I will create a thread called Mrslobodans modquestions or something :) But in a couple of days wont it fall down the list so nobody sees it ? im new to forums aswell xd

actually the link is the one i was following as you see i posted it aswell :P that tut got me a bit confused since it said:
" Important: the first point is a control point and won't show road texture."
But when i do it I have to first make a spline point then the controlpoint, then continue making splines:S

if you are making a map, I would say start a thread here:
Community Maps - Project Reality Forums

If you are just messing around with the tools then no thread is really needed I guess :p

I think I'm doing something wrong, I feel like the problem is I really dont know what the diffrent steps do, like Connect, what does it do, and Apply spline, what does it really do, i feel like im only memorizing not really understanding.

how can i add the pic ? i have it as file now on computer.

Connect iirc (been some time since I've used roads) applies a road template to a spline, ie, gives the spline a road texture and mesh of a road.

Apply Spline modifies the terrain to the road, ie, crates a flat surface to where the road is, good for making roads around hills etc.

Sounds like you don't have enough RAM free to do it and as such, it can't finish applying and screws up your terrain.

Free up memory by closing programs you dont need etc, fresh restart etc helps, or you can just buy some more RAM :p

Yes, do you think the undergrowth and overgrowth can be a problem ? because atm i got terrain texture and undergrowth at the spot im making the road.

Definitely sounds like a RAM problem. Remember that the editor can't use all 8 GB of your RAM since it pre-dates that technology (so I think it only uses 2 or 4 GB). So, try three things:

1. Close extra programs (may not be an issue since you have 8 GB)

2. When loading up the editor, don't load all the extra mod features like weapons and vehicles. If all you want to do is work on the terrain and statics, then just load:
  • common
  • dynamicobjects
  • effects
  • roads
  • staticobjects
  • vegitation
  • water
To do this, at the top of the editor you'll see a menu bar. Click on "Mod" and then "Mod Manager...", then fianlly click on the tab "Editor Content" and in there check only the items you need. Note that when you need to start working on making flags and spawning vehicles, you'll need to add those back in... but you don't need them now and it takes up a lot of memory.

3. Here's a final hint to try. I used to have problems with the terrain disappearing when applying a road spline and it always happened when I had the terrain showing the detail and grid. So, turn off the grid and just display the low resolution terrain. Then when you're done with the road, you can turn it back.

Hope that helps.

Oh... be patient. It's a steep learning curve but well worth it once you get the hang of everything.

Oh, also try this tweak:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-m ... r-exe.html

It's supposedly a way to allow the editor to use more RAM.
