So, short of making our own version of PB and/or PBBans, and in light of the festering disconnect and 9014, what should we do to maintain this level of interconnected information and security?
Oh, very simple: Keep Punkbuster.

I propose to move the essence of this thread into the FAQ, if it is not already there. It is an understandible question that has a lot of interesting factors e.g. giving a program root access to Your computer, etc - but at the end, You can not rely on the community to provide that level of anti-cheating measures, and there is no other financially viable option to do so either.

There are pro's and con's but if people keep getting dropped all the time it is going to wear on them. Don't be so fast to dismiss Changes for Project Reality

Solutions for Punkbuster:

-Download pbsvc and use during pb issues.

-A minimal issue configuration is to use your internet via a switch and not to use the router (since it has a built in firewall).

-Turn off your firewall and program control, if you have a smart protection which scans for intrusions you can keep this on.

-If you must use your router or want that firewall protection you have to open all ports, that being for PB and BF2. Also give PB and BF2 internet permissions to transmit and receive information.

-pb_sleep 500, could reduce some lag in the game as well.

Yesterday I disconnected twice from PRTA during an hour, this was after a long break from PR. Yes, you should really look into your pb settings before starting to play again :) If you don't know the solutions the game must really suck...

The reason this game isn't filled with cheaters is because of that mess that is PB. It is by far one of the most essential things for a server. Just look at some of those games that don't use programs like PB (those nefarious F2P shooters for example).

Only one game need be mentioned to emphasise the drastic need for PB...

ArmA 2.

I rest my case.

Just yesterday on Saint Lo I saw a hacker that made the Germans win a round they wouldn't have otherwise- so, yes.

From our recent experiences in DayZ, the absence of a decent anti cheat system will ruin the game no matter how difficult the game play is from a client's perspective.

The vulnerability of the game engine is also a variable that needs to be looked at (cough Arma cough) but the GUID linking services that the Punkbuster streaming partners provide is invaluable.

For the small percentage of easily fixed issues that PB presents are far outweighed by the advantages of a 95%+ hack free experience.
